HI
i've only recently taken up riding and know nothing about the mechanics of bikes. ;-)

out on my usual 10 mile last night, after 5 miles there was a squeak every half-revolution of the pedals forward, which stopped when freewheeling. By the time I got home, the squeak was continuous, forward and back, but stopped when freewheeling - what is it likely to be and how do I fix it ?

cheers

check that the crank arms are not coming lose. also check the pedals for movement.

Check it's not your shoes in the pedals. I had to stop using Look pedals because I couldn't stand the squeak they made.

    Thanks for the replies.
Nothing feels loose, and it is not my shoes, as the noise continued when I dismounted and moved the pedals by hand.

Curiouser and curiouser, I have come to move the bike this morning and the noise has gone - yesterday it had people staring at me from the other side of a very wide canal !

Could be Bottom Bracket , if it only happens when pedalling, you'll lnow when it goes from a sqeak to a grinding noise

Take it from me, check the skewers have abit of grease on them. This happened on my new madone 5.5 the other week and drove me crazy. Couldnt find anything wrong or loose or even rubbing when id get off the bike, but as soon as I started pedalling - and worse still when i got out of the saddle - i'd hear like a clicking noise.
Most people on here suggested it was the bottom bracket or the bbs, but a tiny bit of grease on the skewers sorted it out no probs.
