I am in need of new wheels for my Specialized Roubaix Elite. I havent got the first clue which would be the best wheels for me as Im 14.5 stone and love climbing hills. I have looked at the Fulcrum Racing 5's which are described as being good for the "heavier" rider.
But Im also not very far from Paul Hewitt who I belive is a quality wheel builder. Do you think that he wll be able to build me a set of suitable wheels for around the price of a factory set?

Hi, I've had a whole bike from Paul and am very pleased with it and the service I received. He did a fit for me without obligation to buy, and was more than happy to answer the load of questions I put to him.
So in answer to the question, you can't go wrong with asking him his opinion, and he should be able to build you something suitable for your needs and your budget.

go to paul H 's if you are close by & take his advice...plenty of elites/pro's already do !0

I've got some Mavic Open Pro rims with Dura Ace hubs. You will hear people refer to them a lot on the forum; they are a very common combination. I think they are great and would more than readily get another set. They freewheel like a dream. But I also think the advice others have given seems good. Hope you get fixed up with a good set.0

On the advice of Paul Hewitt I have just ordered some Mavic Open Pro's with Dura-Ace hubs!!
Should be with me in about 2 weeks. Cheaper than I expected aswell, so Ive asked him to tube them and fit some Michelin Pro-Race 3s!!
Hopefully they will last a while.0 -
Nice work, I am jealous. Let us know what you think of them when they arrive davelakers. BTW, I don't think you can go wrong with the Mich Pro 3's either. I have the 2's and love them. Best set of rubbers I have ever used! :oops:0

Ive got a set of Pro Race 2s on my current wheels and have covered about 1000 miles on them with no p**c*ures or mishaps with them. Good grip and they roll very smooth!!0 -
Cool - what's your spoking pattern and spokes?
I've had Campag. wheels, and - yep, you guessed it - I have a set of OP CDs on Ultegra hubs!
The Campag. wheels are very similar to Fulcrums, and offer a very tight, responsive, if a little crashy ride.
The handbuilts (I have these, and a set of DT RR1.1 double eyelet rims on Centaur hubs) offer a more pliant ride, but still very responsive with no noticable sag/wind-up etc.
I'll probably need at least 1 set of new rims this time next year, so happily this is an easy option with handbuilts.
So you've made a popular choice.....enjoy!0 -

Not sure on the pattern/spoke combo. I left it in the hands of Paul and Gethin who I trust to give me the most appropriate set up.
It seems from people reactions I have made a good choice!!!0 -
