What tyres do you use on your Orange 5?

Just become the happy owner of a Orange 5 pro with Continental King Mountain 2.2 tyres. I've taken it out around Cwmcarn twice and their not inspiring me with much confidence.
I demoed one from Skyline at Afan with Maxxis tyres and the ride was much more inspiring. I've got a pair of Kenda Nevegals 2.35 to try out but thought the rolling resistance might be a bit high.

So what tyres do you run on your Oranges?

Hi I have the Continental Mountain Kings 2.4 on mine, had no probs
    with them.

The Kenda was put on the 5 in 2007 and a lot of people changed them
    at point of sale.

I have the Kendas (Blue Groove 2.35 front, Nevegal 2.35 rear) and the MKings.

When gravity is on your side and it's dry, I don't think there's much out there that will hang on as much as the Kendas - I've been bitching about them all late winter and spring on my local trails (they clog really bad in mud) but now that they're dry and I've been going back to the trail centres - they're awesome!!

I did CwmCarn in the dark late last night and even when I was getting really silly and sliding the back out they'd always find traction eventually and keep me going forwards!

That said, for more allround riding I use the MKings, they're not a great mud-tyre but at least they clear well...

(assuming I don't pinch flat my new Mking supersonics all the time they'll probably stay on for spectacular weight saving - I try them tomorrow - *gulp*)

Recieved my new 5 frame this week, (its a peach) and mine will be getting built up with the Mountain King UST that I've been running for a while I like them.

Is there a big difference between Continental 2.2s and 2.4s?

    yeh about .2

not sure really as not tried the 2.2s however the 2.4 are not massive for their size, I believe due to the way Continental measure their tyres.

I ran Panaracer trailrakers through the winter on my 5 Pro and they are awesome in the mud - they stick like shit to a blanket and will plough through anything. I have read the sidewalls on the Mountain Kings are a bit suspect and was thinking of swopping to Maxxi High Rollers once I get this plaster cast off my foot. Can anybody recommend a particular summer tyre?

I'm still impressed with my Kenda Dred Treads

They deal with everything except really loose stuff ie Gravel and Sand!

Super quick on the Hard pack

    Ps

I don't have an Orange, but don't mind you making at least the right choice with you tyres :lol::lol::lol::lol:

Thanks for the replys. Think I'll try the Kenda's out and see how I get on. Can anybody recommend an inner tube?

zero303 - Cwmcarn in the dark! That scares me, too many sheep around at the moment. All the glowing eyes in the dark would distract me, probably fataly.

Cps - I was thinking about the Maxxis but don't really know which ones would be best for trails.
My bike choice was purely based on the width of the smile it put on my face.
Going by the amount of smiling your doing, I guess your over compensating for a moment of bad judgement. :D:D:D

Tyres, the best for one trail might not be the best for another, but saying that, I've used Panaracer Fire XC Pro's in 2.1 flavour for years now, they work well in most conditions, barring thick mud, but hey not many tyres cope with thick mud!

Highly recommended all rounder tyre, and pretty cheap a ~£40 a pair (Merlin).

Tubes, I use any, usually something from the shop's stock ;) (Kenda, Schwalbe...) Not really noticed any difference TBH.

Andymtb I thought you would be better off with a tyre that would stick
being the weather is good at the moment.
I dont know the name of the tyres that stick mind.

Best advice would be to take a couple of sets of tyres, so you dont
    ruin your weekend riding.

Zero303 did you get a body suit in the end ?

    Andy

If you haven't used them already i found the following a useful sites for reviews,

    http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/tire/

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/

Combining the reviews gives a good for / against opinion by product users not just mag reviewers.

Plus of course the opinions on here!!!!

Re my bike choice your right!!!

I maybe should have saved a bit harder to get the Carbon version of my bike 8) 8)

CwmCarn is wicked in the dark - probably on of my fave ever rides actually!

The sheep were an issue, I came tanking round a corner in the freeride park to find a good 10 or more on the trail - most of them bolted left or right. However, one of them couldn't decide and proceeded to run down the trail for a good 3 metres or so before finally choosing left and letting me on my way

I also came across a suicidal badger who crossed the trail at the last minute!

RE: body suit. I was in between sizes on the BrandX but the real deal breaker was it was just too hot to realisticly wear any when except winter. I've compromised on just getting elbow/forearm guards.

Trying a 2.25 Ralph with a 2.4 Nobby on my Meta at the mo. Both evo with latex tubes as I like to try different options out :)

Just shy of a pound lighter than the stock setup and wider on both ends, those latex tubes are quite impressive too, I noticed a little thorn right through the sidewall of my Ralphs when I took them off my hardtail. Only 1mm or so but they didn't split, I've had them ages now with no issues. I do make a point of not using them when the thorns are all over though, its's innertube suicide sometimes.

I've been running 2.4 mountain kings on my pitch fo a few months now and I'm very impressed with them, especially round trail centres.

As you say they're not brilliant in mud, but I feel the will improve your skills over summit like a High Roller as you can't just plough straight through/over things without thinking
