My Sora right shifter has given up after about 10,000 pretty abusive miles. Well done Shimano!!! As I am going to change/replace and I was getting fed up with not being able to shift from the drops, I need some advice as to what comes next...

Looking at Ribble

http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/ProductLi ... ootCatID=1

it seems they are the cheapest.

1) Does a Campag gear shifter work with Shimano derailleurs?

2) My rear derailleur is a Tiagra and so can take a 9 speed. At Ribble it seems some of the 10 speeds shifters are the same price as 9. Is there really much difference. I imagine chain would be v expensive???

3) Is 9 speed noticeably better than 8? I have ahilly commute of 75-100 miles a week and do alot of shifting.

4) What does QS Escape Ergopowers mean? see http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/productde ... 0000000000

Any ideas please. Cheers for reading.

I would stick with Shimano and get Tiagra or 105 9 speed shifters, a new 9 speed cassette a SRAM chain and keep your rear mech if it is not too worn. That will be a nice upgrade for not too much money.

Has anyone got the Tiagra 4500 9 Spd levers?

They are 83.66 at Ribble i imagine this is the cheapest I will get them!

The Derailleur is worn but not failing can replace the jockeys and it hasn't seized up yet at all.

If I got Campag would I need Campag derailleur? Anyone know for sure......

You can shift with the drops with campag. Very easily infact, the button is just in a better position than the sora button.

    Campag FTW

I have the Tiagra 4500 levers, upgraded from the old Tiagra. They are a comfortable shape (like 105) and shifting is really smooth, very pleased with them.

    Hi
I've just bought Tiagra 4500 9 speed for my 8 speed commute/second bike. They seem to work fine with 8 speed although in theory they shouldn't.
I replaced 8 speed Shimano shifters (which are for sale if you fancy - a bit scratched but function perfectly!), however, having ridden for around 2 weeks with the Tiagra, and seen how they work with the 8 speed set up, personally I would go with Tiagra if I were in your shoes, and then upgrade the cassette/chain to 9 speed when they need replacing (which is what I'll be doing in around 3000 or so km).

Having said that, if you want to stick with 8 speed shimano shifters let me know!!!

PS you won't need to change the rear derailleur as the sora derailleur works fine with 9 speed set up.
