Long to short cage.... help!

Hi, i've just changed my rear mech from XT long cage to a SRAM X9 medium cage.
I seem to have rather a lot of chain & the chain is rubbing when on the smallest ring due to the mech being folded over.
Should I shorten the chain to prevent this?

mech size has NO relationship to the chain length. you set the chain lenth with out the mech.
sounds like you need a long cage mech.
If you do shorten it some gears will not be useable.

Yes I did, I've taken 3 links out the chain and it seems fine now. A little bit of skipping 2 gears when shifting but I the XT setup did the same anyway so I think the cassette may be worn.
