Broken Shimano Deore Derailleur

Hi,
I have a 3 month old Trek 6300 (done 250 miles from new) and was out on a ride at the weekend. Either the chain snapped and the derailleur broke or the derailleur broke and the chain snapped ?? either way, they were both bu@@ered.
In in emergency to get home, I had to visit a local MTB shop and get a replacement fitted and the chain fixed.
Any advice if I can calim a refund on the warranty as this item is covered for 1 year, but I had to get the work done there and then.
Appreciate any advice.
