Hi,

I have a 3 month old Trek 6300 (done 250 miles from new) and was out on a ride at the weekend. Either the chain snapped and the derailleur broke or the derailleur broke and the chain snapped ?? either way, they were both bu@@ered.

In in emergency to get home, I had to visit a local MTB shop and get a replacement fitted and the chain fixed.

Any advice if I can calim a refund on the warranty as this item is covered for 1 year, but I had to get the work done there and then.

Appreciate any advice.

    nope things do break.

return the broken parts to the supplying shop for return to the bike importers. if there is any material fault then you may get a replacement.

  • I was cycling up a road, not off road, no severe incline and I changed to a lower gear.

So then you pay £600 for a bike and a component brakes within 3 months and you are expected to accept it???

Worth a go, but they'll most likely say not to change when pedaling under pressure. I've seen it done a few times. Contact the shop you bough it from.
  • I can't see them stumping up for the repair, they're unlikely to test the components you send back and will probably point the finger of blame at your riding technique or maintenance/usage. changing gear with load on the chain and on an incline can be dodgy, I've broken a chain that way (though it was quite old)
If your bike had a broken weld or a frame defect they'd probably take it seriously, but its so easy for them to blame you and theres not really a damn thing anyone can/will do about it.
