How long does a helmet last?

I have had my helmet 5 or 6 years now. It's not been crashed and I can't see any problems with it but just wondered whether they weaken over time and how long you should use them for before replacing them?

Not trying to sound like a smart a**, but for me I get a new one when the old one starts looking ratty or smells really bad or I see one with just the right color combinations
on it or the advertisement says "just like an air conditioner for your head". Well, maybe not the last part. Every 2 or 3 years, give or take a year or two.

Gave my helmet a shower recently :o and the amount of gunge that came out of the straps was frightening. I took the strap off, one piece and washed it seperately and spent 3 hours trying to get the strap to fit as I had it before  not helped by the fact the new pads I blagged from LBS were thicker than the old oned that had perished. My helmet is getting on for 6+ years old now.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

I Googled 'replace helmet' and found
    http://www.helmets.org/replace.htm

They give a whole set of reasons why you would, but for just 'old age' they reckon every 5 years or so.
