Hi

I'm refurbing an old 1980s Ribble 531c road bike and want to know the handlebar stem clamp size. I don't have the stem with me to measure it, so I was hoping someone might know what the typical standard for the time was. It's a 1 inch threaded fork with a quill type stem. I want to get some new bars and brake levers, but need to make sure I get the right size.

Many thanks in advance.

Also, if anyone knows the pedal thread size on a 1980s Shimano 600 crankset, that would be great.

ElCani, If you mean what size is the expanding wedge part of the quill stem, it'll be 22.2mm. If you mean the diameter of where the 'bars clamp in the stem, that will depend on the manufacturer you opt to go for- Cinelli were different to everyone else, using, if memory serves, a 26.8m clamp size....ITM, 3TTT et al opted for 25.8mm. This all changed again however in the late 90's, then changed again when Oversize bars appeared!

Post some pics when you're done!
If it ain't fixed, it's broke...

Thanks, I mean the diameter of the clamp that holds the bars to the stem. I want to use the old stem, but fit some new bullhorn bars (e.g. Charge Slice Bar) and some flat-bar brake levers.

    So, for example:

    Charge Slice Bar http://tinyurl.com/6fbj8d

    with

Shimano Ultegra flat bar levers: http://tinyurl.com/6fddeb

All attached to the original stem. Would that combo work, assuming the stem is not a Cinelli?

The Slice is "Normal standard 26mm clamp diameter" and I therefore very much doubt that you will have any problems fitting to your existing stem. NOT guaranteed without seeing/measuring of course!

What dia bars do Shimano state for the brake levers? ....(edit!) says "Calliper brake levers designed specifically for flat handlebars (22.2 mm diameter)" so again I assume OK for the Slice.
