Helmet on the bars

When It gets hot and the ride is uphill for the next 5 miles or more I often whip off my lid and bodge the straps round my stem, bars and anything else to get enough tension so it does not get stuck in the front wheel. I know a car could come and crush me but it gets hot...

On my last ride doing this my brother gave me a hard time claiming I was risking my life just to be a bit cooler, my shrug wasn't sufficient to reassure. Could my old Giro Havoc be too hot and would any helmet be realistically as nice as riding free,

So do you do it? do you have a way of mounting the helmet to your bike without pulling the helmet straps needing readjustment when you put it back on, is there a cool lid holder made from carbon that I can mount, am I risking my life? should I not post silly posts that might cause a barrage of attacks on the problem with cyclists these days, when the good ol' days nobody wore a helmet?...
the day I stop dreaming of upgrades is the day die!

I've been "Risking my life" for 45 years.

I can see this turning into a very long thread.

I buckle up the straps then hook the chin strap in between the stem bolts that loads the headset.

If it was my brother he'd be risking his life as I switched him into a ditch.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.
  • Hot weather here saw a shed load of cyclists out with no lids on, some i know where lids in the winter so why not the summer?

Just sweat and get used to it, anyway wowmen like sweaty smelly men, honest! Right girls?
    This is why!

Ditching the brother technique is only applicable when you haven't got heat stoke and sweat poisoning of the eyes from a lack of helmet, I guess their are pro's and cons, still I am a risk taker, can I go to jail for not obeying the highway code?

I ride a flat bar Scott S30 and I hang mine from the bar ends when it gets a bit warm..... only when I'm on quiet roads tho. 8)

  • I'm not going to get at you for not wearing a helmet, I've done it often enough. But can you imagine your obituary if you get hit whilst your helmet is hanging from the handlebars? Wear it or leave it at home, but to die with it swinging from the bars would be too humiliating.

Your next of kin could sue the manufacturers for not sticking on a warning label, "This helmet must only be attached to the head".

I've just perched it on a brake hood using the plastic bit that goes over your ears before now, though climbs in the UK have never been hot or long enough to merit this sort of behaviour.

A big part of being safe is being comfortable. If you're overheating with sweat running into you eyes then it's far safer to hang the helmet over the bars than wear it.

I have not lived in the UK for about 7 years now and I have heard of global warming so how hot is hot?
I have cycled extensively in the Middle East and here in Thailand without a problem. Temperature here in Bangkok is about 90F year round and the humidity is high, Saudi desert - very high temps with no humidity. Does it get like that in the UK now?
If you don't want to get hot & sweaty then the answer is simple - do not cycle! Ever thought of taking a small towel with you to wipe the sweat off?

The Havoc is more an MTB helmet (although I use mine on the road to), the high-end road helmets tend to have a lot more vents/lighter weight.

Personal choice really but if my head gets too hot over the summer to wear my Havoc on climbs I'll happily fork out £100-120 to try a roadie helmet instead of taking off the Havoc for climbs.

I don't really notice my head getting that hot with either of my helmets. The only thing I really do notice on a hot sweaty climb is that my glasses really steam up meaning I've got to take them off.

It's not that hot in the UK surely?

    Ditto
Brisk walking speed up alpe Dhuez - helmet off, otherwise on. Even to the shops.

Clip buckle under the stem, with the straps going over the tops of the bars, and the helmet resting against the STI levers. This is fine and very safe on a large frame. Campag users don't have the cables there of course - there is one good use for the washing lines!

On the safety side - 8mph up a col is little diffferent to walking/jogging. I wouldn't wear a helmet to walk! But then I do rides without a helmet anyway. Humans managed to survive cycling up to the late 80s without putting a polystyrene pudding bowl on their heads

:D We'll see that all over the back of them one day!
I always wear a helmet. At this point, when I'm riding, I don't notice it anymore.
