White Rose Classic - GPS track

I'm trying to sort out a route to stick into my Garmin, but I'm getting a bit confused from the WRC website when the 85 mile routs gets around Blubberhouses - and the map on the website's pretty small scale.

Has anyone got a large scale map, motionbased track or even better a route I can stick straight into my Garmin?

I realise the route's well signposted but it'd be nice to know how far we've got to go!

Cheers all

  • Did you get any joy? I'm looking for the same just in case I get separated from everyone in an area of the country I'm not familiar with.

I didn't, but if you go here:

    http://www.cyclosport.org/article.aspx?id=353

at the bottom there's a google map you can zoom in to get detail of the full route. They did post a garmin route last year and they reckoned if I posted here someone'd help out but no joy so far. I reckon I know where the 85mile route goes and will be garminising it at some point - which route're you doing? If it's the middle route I'll email it to you once it's done.

    cheers

  • Thanks. That's a scary write-up. I'm supposedly doing the long route but I'm worried now.

I've extracted the KML, translated it into a GPX and now got a 'course' file, all 3.5MB of it! It is based on the 2007 long route (I'm hoping it's the same) and seems to include small detours into feed stops. First thing I noticed was the start and finish are slightly different places, I hadn't realised it.

If nothing else shows up, and if I work out somewhere to host it I'll post a link - absolutely no guarantees that it's correct!

Cor - how'd you extract the list? Clever stuff. The start's on Pool road in Otley and it finishes just short of Otley on the road from Askwith - maybe a couple of miles apart. Assume they don't want a thousand knackered cyclists all pootling through Otley! Apparently it used to finish over cow and calf in Ilkley but they had problems with everyone riding through Ilkley town centre so they changed it.

Without getting overly technical here's what I did. Some of it may be useful in future for other routes.
    1. Obtain the KML for the route. This is the most 'techy' part. The link you sent (http://www.cyclosport.org/article.aspx?id=353) had an embedded google map. Looking at the source of the page indicated this came from http://www.cyclosport.org/googlemaps/em ... d-WRC.html so I opened this in a browser. Looking at the source of this page indicated the KML file (most simply put, the route you see on the google map) came from http://www.cyclosport.org/googlemaps/kml/WRC2007-2.xml so I opened this in a browser and then saved the source with a '.kml' extension

    2. Turn the KML into a GPX track. I looked for free apps on the internet and uncovered an app called KML2GPX. This seemed to do the trick, although I have never used this app before

    3. Turn the GPX track into a CRS (course) file. This part I do all the time from GPX files I generate from bikeroutetoaster.com It requires an app called gxp2crs (http://forums.motionbased.com/smf/index ... 1143353869). I run it with options to simulate an average speed of 'pick your target' and usually select to add extra track points every 40m.

    4. You then have course file you can load to your garmin via, say, training centre. Note, if you import the course into training centre it loses it's name for some reason but it's simple to rename it
