Anybody advise on whether it is permissable to camp on the Col de Croix de Fer? I noticed some tents up there by the dam when i rode it last year but possibly, in an area of such beauty, they were there with special permision?

Many thanks

  • I've seen people rough camping in the high mountains, but never close to the road when the Tour de France isn't around. I found the following on a forum...

"Wild camping" is tolerated in quite a few places. But if you see the sign "Camping Sauvage Interdit" don't do it.

Rough Guide warns people against 'camping sauvage' on private land, as farmers and landowners are known to open fire first and then ask questions, if their ferocious dogs don't get you first. If you do want to camp rough, ask for permission first. But since simple but clean municipal campsites are everywhere and cost so little, there's usually no need to.

I'm sure you can do it, but try and find a hidden place I guess.

    Cheers, Russell
