I need to buy a new rear hub for my bike, it is a 07 stumpjumper fsr elite with DT Custom X430 32h rims. The old hub is a Shimano M-525 disc, 32h, QR, the bearings have had it and I think there is a problem with the freewheel. I have been looking at the Hope pro 2 hubs but they do seem pricey. I want something good quality that will last, sealed bearings. What would be the cheaper alternatives to the hope? Buying advice please would be much appreciated.

Also will I need new spokes for this job? I have a friend who will very kindly build the wheel back up for me (thanks pete!)

How about try and service the hub? Might just need a strip, new beaings, grease and adjustment.

New hub will require new spokes unless by some fluke they are the same length as the new ones for the new hub. Sometimes cheaper just to buy a new wheel!

Also remember a sealed bearings is just a bearing with seals. I guess you mean 'cartridge'.

yes sorry, I think I mean cartridge bearing. My last bike had these and when they did eventually die they were cheap and easy to replace.

I have serviced the hub once and it was on its last legs, the cones(?) looked a bit pitted, anyway I put it all back together with some good quality grease. It was very difficult to set it back up right as it was either very lumpy as it spun or loose/wobbly and it is same now with the additional annoyance of the freewheel slipping every now and again, I'm pretty sure some thing has gone wrong in the ratchet device (I'm sure thats not the right name) inside as I can't trace it to anything else.

I'll have a look at these Nuke proof hubs then. What about the DT swiss ones like the rims. Are they any good?

You can get replacement freehubs and new cones and bearings and use the old axle but if the bearing surface in the hub is KO'd then a new hub it is. Think the above will cost about £25 and easy enough to be done at home. Freehub is only a 10mm allen key to remove.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

DT swiss ones are good, I used to have a pair on a bike I sold to my brother, and he still has them, and they are about 10 years old, and still running fine, so unless build quality has slipped in the last ten years, you should be fine.
However: DT swiss hub prices are comparable to the Hopes.
If the want something cheaper, consider an XT hub (still cup and cone) but very decent and a bit of a weight saving on the 525. Or, you could just get another 525!
If you want another option (who doesn't!) consider a DMR revolver, these have cartridge bearings so its essentailly fit and forget like the Pro 2, but they aren't as light, long lasting or cool as the Pro 2.
If you are going to buy a new Pro 2 or something of similar price, then you probably should consider getting a whole new wheel, while seemingly not very eco-friendly, its not going to cost you an awful lot more to have a whole new one from CRC or Merlin than it would to buy an expensive hub and pay your local bike shop to fit it to your old rim.
Spokes-wise, and don't hold me to this one, but i was under the impression that it was best not to re-cycle them if possible. So even if you were to get another hub with the same sized flange you might consider replacing them?
