What is banning them for life going to solve exactly?

    2 years is plenty.

Exactly. Millar admitted his guilt, and seems to be trying to finish his career as a clean rider, I guess the punishment worked then.

Lifebans are as useless as as prison or death penalty...it's about eh odds of being caught not the punishment that the potential doper thinks about

Anyway, Millar is clean and showed a few days ago he is still capable of winning at grand tour level stages

    No one said that.

But he's done a 2 year ban when he got caught.

What difference will life bans make when you basically require bad luck to be caught?

no way is a 2 year ban an example of someone going unpunished. especially in a sport where things change so quicky, when a rider comes back after 2 years out he'll be racing against a very different field of riders, and his riding certainly won't be the same

The problem isn't riders thinking something like "hey, it's only two years, that's no punishment", it's that for many, the thinking goes "so few riders ever get caught, only the stupid ones get busted, so my chances of being banned for a year, two or even for life are very small".

Life bans are like the death penalty, they don't deter the crime. What actually deters people is detection, whether it is being caught doping or the chances of getting caught for murder. It's like speeding, most drivers do 35mph in a 30 zone because they won't be caught and will never be punished, even a speed camera won't flash at them. Many pro riders are the same, they carry on because they know they just won't get caught.

As others have said, life bans are a death sentence.
The problem with a death sentence is, you can't unhang an innocent man.
Two years out of a career of say 14 years, is a hefty chunk of time, for
    an initial offence.
Life bans should only be applied to habitual offenders.

But yes, there are plenty of thieves still out there.
Many more than we like to admit.
So, you have to take things as they stand,
    otherwise, there is no point.

Of course the British press are biased to Millar, he's British. But seriously Millar has taken a totally different route from many drug cheats. Basso has treated us all as idiots and Landis continues to blabber on about being innocent.

What the UCI/ASO/Teams themselves, need to do is increase the chance of being caught. At the moment, the reaction to a positive is often; idiot shouldn't have got caught, rather than; bloody drug cheat.

Overall these days i think more riders are getting caught and less are cheating, as cheating is no longer built into the team structure therefore riders have to actively seek out drugs and this makes it more likely that the riders will test positive. (admittedly i have no evidence for this)

2 year bans obviously don't work either, why not simply scrap them as well!!! Detection is the answer but there has to be some consequences of indulging in the practice.

Riders are aware of the consequences before they shoot up so at least if a lifetime ban was applied, one bit of the poison is removed for good and one less to worry about.

They shouldn't be allowed to participate in cycling events end of. Ban for life? definitely!

Can't stand Miller's 'holier than thou' stance rubbish he comes out with, he's just a hypocrite.

The British press haven't got a clue, if it doesn't involve a leather ball and 22 buffoons running around a patch of grass, what do they know?

Millar has 'done his time' and has now come back into the sport with a different attitude and should be encouraged not castigated. If we take your look at things all prison sentences would be for life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strange combination talking about doping and alcohol - both are bad.
