    Bloomin bargain!

I got mine from Halfrods earlier this year and I thought that was cheap!

Guys, and whoever gets one, I could do with another mount, and these come with 2 mounts, one for stem, and one for handlebar, so whichever you don't want, I'm happy to pay you say £5 inc P&P for it - as I said, I don't care which one it is.

PM me if your up for it, I can paypal or send you a cheque.

    Cheers

    Hi Guys

    Daniel
Unfortunately I need both mounts to mount on two different bikes.
I would think you can get spares though.

If you are going to buy I would move quickly as I don't think they will be around for much longer. They didn't have any others on display at the Festival Park store Stoke on Trent, where I got mine.

    regards

Many thanks for the heads up, I nearly bought one yesterday from Halfords as well.

I would have been really miffed if I had bought one then saw this thread the following day!!!! :o

All but one shop in a 30 mile radius had sold out.

Ok glad to have been of help on this one.

Stoke, Stafford, & Stockport now showing as not available at these stores.

A few weeks ago I nearly bought a similar own brand product at Decathlon Stockport glad i didn't now as it was £10 dearer and user feedback wasn't very good.

I had a quick spin around the block with mine this afternoon and the 205 seems to be in a different league.

So when you get yours - Enjoy

Went down to P'boro PC World and got the last 205 left which was marked up at £80. Took the box to the nearest pcworld minion and told them it was £50 on the web etc etc and that is what i wanted to pay. He was cool and said just take it to the cashier and it will be sorted. On a sidenote when i told him it was the last one left he was gutted as he said he had meant to pick one up...lol

Anyways, buy the unit no probs and go home. On closer inspection the box had a little sticker on it saying 'pre-owned'. I opened the box up and everything was just chucked in there, the unit didnt have the film on it etc. Worse of all the mounting system was not even in the box. So off i go to PC World, return the item and get a refund. Gutted as it was the last one.

On a whim i went to Halfords to see if they would price match, didnt hold out much hope. I get in there and they have the Garmin 205 marked up at £149...yes thats £149. I asked the dude working what price he could do, he said £129. I told him about the PC World deal, after tooing and froing to his managers he said he could match it but needed to ring PC World to check the price and make sure they had stock in. Uh Oh! So i told him to just check on the website, which he did. Price checked out and i walked out of Halfords with £80 off what they were trying to charge for the unit. Cheers!

So in summary, if your local PC World does not have one, see if Halfords will price match them.

Got mine today, thanks for the heads up.

Basingstoke were showing they had one, but when I got there (after "Collect@Store"), they had the box, but nothing inside it. One of the little blighters there must have walked with it GRRRR

So looked for some other stores and Brentwood was reasonably close to my work, so went and got one there, bargin! Charging it right now :D

Does anyone have experience of using these for navigation - i.e. can you plot a map on the PC, and then follow the edge out on the trail?

I have read that it is not so good for off road compared with road riding.

I have one reserved at PC world for £50, so I have 24 hours to make up my mind!

    Thanks

+1 - from what I've read, if you need nav then you need the 607/705 as they have proper maps. But be prepared to pay about £350 for a 705 with full topo maps for offroad use. I think for road, or even well ridden track it would be fine, but for tight, technical track you would need the 705.

yeah the 705 comes with either a mtb or road bundle. Think the 205 just does waypoints. If you want mapping maybe look at a cheap etrex and memory map or similar

    Got one from Telford branch.
Couldn't find the box for it so gave it to me in a clear plastic box with another tenner off.

Have found some useful other software as the Garmin stuff is n't brill.

Free one from SportsTracks lets you superimpose the track by export to Google Earth the tracks aren't 100% accurate with my unit but not to bad

Tracklogs is another which has much cheaper maps - just ordered one with a home centred map for £14- looks a bit complex yet.

Hi, firstly I am really grateful to Milkie for letting me know about this, I hadn't spotted it!
I have just got my 305 from the Hedge End store of PC World in Southampton and it's charging now.

The reason for this post (other than to brag about my new toy) was two things:
    1. Don't always believe the stock levels that are posted online. When I found out how cheap these were going for I went straight online (a huge advantage of having unrestricted internet at work) to try and reserve mine. When I got to the select your store step I chucked my postcode in but it reported there was none in any of the 3 stores within range. I even tried Bristol thinking I could get my folks to pick it up for me and post it, but ended up giving up as they all said they were out of stock. However, to cut a long story short, I added a half mile detour to my ride home to see if the people in store could do a national search for any stores that had one left, thinking I might be able to get someone else to grab one for me. Turns out they did have one in stock at my store after all. So while I followed the guy, not wanting to let him out my sight unless someone else ran off with my prize, he explained to me me that they only display stock on the web site if there are at least THREE showing as in stock on the stores system. This is apparently to prevent disappointment when customers reserve online and turn up to find it was a stock level fault. The moral of this story, if you REALLY want one and the web site says your store hasn't got any, go to your store anyway and get them to check their system, you may find they have one after all!

    2. I think Halfords are getting wise to this. When I lost hope at getting one from PC World (before the stroke of luck that gave me mine) I thought I too would try getting a few people to price match the offer. First stop Halfords, there is one not far from my house so I could grab it on the way home if they would do it. When I spoke to the guy there he said he would have to check with his manager. So I spoke to the manager and he said he would have to ring head office and get back to me. So, he phones me back and says they now need to speak to Garmin to check that the ones in PC World are the same as the ones they sell (I would have thought about 15 secs on the internet would be able to tell them that - considering the product codes were the same) and that the item would have to be available (in stock) in a PC World store within 10 miles. If it was available within 10 miles I would have already bought one!!! As soon as he phoned me back I got the impression he was basicly just trying to get out of matching it, so be warned!

If you have found one, enjoy it they are now officially rare. Something else I discovered while in PC World is that this is a discontinued line (apparently any product in PC world that is priced up as £X.97 not £X.99 is a discontinued line so no more stock will be recieved).
If you haven't yet got yours, happy hunting and I hope you either find one or find someone who will match the price for you (Chain Reaction Cycles won't - or at least they wouldn't for me).

If thats true then it doesnt work very well! My local PC World are rubbish. I reserved one online to find that they didnt have any in stock. Also before this, I tried to reserve a router, and low and behold when I got there they didnt have it! To their credit they did give me the next router model up for a small surcharge, but still the system is crap. I do agree though, if you have a local store they get down to them and give it a punt, no doubt they will have the one that is meant to be in my local store!

Halfrauds will do anything and everything in their power to not price match. So much so that I have seen places like that have their own unique model numbers for the same things so they can claim they are different. Silly things like a 205 in PC World might be a X205 in Halfrauds. A lot more retailers are doing this these days, especially with TVs.

I also beleive the 205/305 have been superceeded by the 605/705 now, they are the current advertised models in bike mags etc.

I've finally found one of these chaps in St Helens, last one though i'm affriad so don't go rushing there. but according to the store stock thingy they've got 1+ in Blackpool of anyonesgoing to see the lights this weekend.

Anyway, Just wondering, but is it possible to plot route on things like memory map and upload the waypoints onto it. I believe it can save the way points of your present journey for you to download later so i'm just guessing to can do it in reverse

    All helps thankfully received,

Danny: yes you can upload routes. Its a bit of a faff. What you have to do is do them in memory map or on websites such as http://www.bikehike.co.uk and save them as .gpx files. Then open Training Center import it and upload it to the unit. Works well for road routes, I've knocked up about five or six loops around my local roads with bikehike.

  • They've got 1 left on display in Blackburn.

I've just taken my Edge 305 back to PC World and they swapped it for a new one. It was getting tempramental and wouldn't hold charge. Mind you, I'd had it 2 weeks short of a year. Now I've got a fresh one with no scratches on the screen and 12 months warranty. Happy days indeed!

    Chris`I

You can upload straght to the unit from Memory Map. Just right click your route and send to GPS!. I think you may have to tell Memory Map that you have GArmin gps first, but only the first time. I load most of my routes on to MM and it takes seconds to send them to the Edge.
  • Just picked one of these up off ebay, should the unit have a proper backlight as in glow in the dark or is it just a standard lcd backlight?
