absolutely gutted.

I was all kitted up to do 50 miles just now and as I pushed off and clipped in there was a crack noise and now the freehub (and therefore the whole transmission) on my fairly new Easton EA90 aero tt's are spinning freely and silently in both directions.

what on earth has happened?

Your freehub is knackered. As it's new, you should get a replacement wheel.

Thanks for the reply. I should hope i'd get them replaced and quickly.

I've never heard of this happening before with new wheels and aren't easton wheels at this price meant to be pretty good.

Having bought them online I've also got the rigmarole of getting them back to the dealer - good argument for lbs I guess...Really annoyed as after an enforced 5 month break I was just getting back into my stride and gaining some fitness for the Mountain Mayhem Sportive.

Happened to me once and the local bike shop fixed it - the ratchet had just got stuck. I don't think their fix was very scientific and probably just involved a few taps with a mallet.

This symptom would be consistent with the pawl spring breaking. This is the loop of metal that holds the pawls (the little ratchets that lock the freehub when you spin it clockwise) in place and makes them spring up and lock the freehub so the chain turns the wheel.

It's happened to me and takes 10 minutes to fix once you have the spring.

I wouldn't take the risk of bodging a fix on a freehub - call the shop, explain the problem and get them to send you a replacement freehub rather than having the aggro/your cost of having to send the wheels back. There are different designs of freehub, some don't use springs, but the crack would indicate something breaking i.e. terminal.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
