Rear rack on a non-touring road bike

Hello all,
I am going to Northern Ireland for a few days (first taste of touring!) in August on my Lemond road bike and need a wee bit of advice regarding a rear rack. I won't need too much in the way of luggage - no tent - as it is only a 3 day trip but am not keen on a backpack so I need to rig up a small rack / pannier combination. Has any one any experience of travelling on a racing cycle with panniers? I can't afford a touring bike so need to customise the Lemond to suit.
Any help would be most appreciated - thanks in advance,
Iain

Hi Enzo Berzot
I've fitted a light rear rack on my road bike using p clips on the seat stays and it worked fine. It's carried panniers each side along with a bag on top of the rack. I had no problems doing lejog this year. One thing to watch is getting clearance between your heels and the panniers, you might have to make some kind of extension brackets to get the rack far enough back.0 -
Many thanks Ancient,
It sounds like a small project for my LBS.0 -
If it is only for three days and there is no camping involved then you might want to consider something along the lines of a Carradice saddlebag.

i would also agree with the above post
carradice sqr or bagman ... camper longflap is ideal also size is relatively limited
so you cant pack too much always the problem with panniers

I'd second that too, carradice is great for two or three day trip. Also consider a handlebar bag too, both not exactly fashionable but idel for shorter trip and avoiding extra weight of panniers.0
