Would like to hire a motorhome for hols - advice sought...

I'd like to hire a motorhome in august, but looking at websites for the uk the prices are very expensive approx 750 quid a week for a 2 berth. I know its peak time, but has anyone hired one over the channel or in spain?
reason we want to use a motorhome is that it gives us freedom to explore easily different parts of spain, the wife can deal with our 5 month old baby better than we'd be able to using hostels, can take the bikes, plus we've never done this kind of holiday in a motorhome before.
I want to drive down to spain for 3 weeks holidays in august. Originally going to get the ferry to santander until I saw the prices for that (nearly fell off me chair!).
So the plan now is to just drive through france - much to the missus' dismay (we're only agreed to go to france every other year for the tour and this is the non tour year for us so she is not happy).
Anyone got recommendations on who/where to pick up a motorhome, can anyone lend me theirs?
, or at least point me to a decent french or spanish website (most spanish ones leave alot to be desired)
