Started out my road riding using SPDs as was told they are easiest to get used to. Now i've been riding a bit longer (and only had 1 moment) I'm thinking about swapping to something more road specific. What would people suggest as a good starting road pedal?

Opinions on Crank Brothers?

Thanks

You'll get as many answers are there are pedals available! Pedals are about as personal as saddles.

Crank bros (I have some of the simple egg beaters on a mtb) are easy get to into - easier than spd's, and they have less restricted float. Although SPD's have float, I always felt that once you started the pedal stroke, the foot angle was pretty much fixed. Crank bros aren't too bad in that sense - assuming that float is good.

The biggest problem for me is that I never feel "locked in" - there always seems to be a little play fore and aft.

I'm a Speedplay user myself - strange, wonderful pedals, but not for everyone.

Big questions for you - do you want one sided or multi-sided entry? Do you want float?
Do you want recessed cleats to make it easier to walk around? Do your pedals need to be compatible with mtb shoes?

Tick these questions off and the choices narrow down somewhat.

Good luck. You can get spd's with a platform, by the way. There's a lot of talk about platform size, but its nowhere near as important as the stiffness of your shoe, and not all that important for mere mortals past a certain point anyway. If you get on with spd's why not stay with them?
