For anyone that's interested have just bought a pair from woggle and I have to say for £40 odd they are ruddy marvellous. I couldn't quite get my head round £100+ for a pair of Assos so I cant compare them to the generally ackowledged best, but they are very very comfortable and fit well, and feel well made; much better than the dhb stuff.

Well to be fair, unless you have had Assos you can't really compare. I'm sure the Brikos are very nice and I have bought Brikos before and they're nice, but when you have bought a pair of Assos bib shorts, then you know and realise what the fuss is all about. They are expensive for a reason.

    Good luck to you SteveR.
  • Since I spend most of my time wearing club shorts, I wouldnt get the benefit of spending £100 on a pair of shorts, plus they won't make me go any faster....I'm sure assos are the dogs do das but they are not necessary in order to ride/race (any more than you need a German car to get from A to B  )

Assos shorts aren't necessarily £100+. I just bought a pair of Uno shorts from Ribble for £53. The same I paid for my Campag shorts a few years back. I must say, I think I'm a convert. The pad is excellent, the Lycra is the best quality I've felt, they fit nicely and my arse was in prime condition after 83 miles on Saturday. Thats the longest ride I've ever done but I felt like I've done longer when wearing other shorts! Very comfortable and by all accounts they last well so all in all a good purchase I think. I've only used Endura and Campag so can't comment on Briko or any other brand but I think I'll be sticking with Assos now.

This is true, absolute bargain. It's only when you actually buy a pair and experience them do you realise how good they are. Apologies for sounding like a record here, but it is true.

I heard that record alot Giant Man and decided to listen in the end! I guess its hard to believe that a piece of kit can be that much better than cheaper, or similarly priced items. I won't comment if thats true or not because I haven't used Briko, Sportful, Nalini, Castelli, Giordana, Santini etc. etc. But they are damn nice..

Reviews can throw you off though. I checked this one out.... http://www.roadcyclinguk.com/news/article/mps/uan/1676 which states that the Assos Mille have 'unrivalled comfort' but then only gets 8/10...based on price I assume. The Giordanas get 10 and he says you can buy 2 pairs for the price of a pair of Assos but the obvious question is...whats the point if they're not as comfy? Having 2 pairs doesn't make them comfier. You could buy 10 pairs of Lidls shorts for the cost of a pair of Assos shorts but you're no better off if they're not as nice to wear. You don't wear 10 at once to make up for it!

I went with what everyone on the forums said in the end. That Assos are the best money can buy. One of the other reasons I went for Assos in the end was the fact that people said they can be sent back to Switzerland and fixed up as good as new if a problem develops with them and so a single pair can last for years. I must say I didn't notice anything about that in the blurb that came with them. Just how far does their commitment extend? Can you send them back even if the damage is normal wear and tear?

Sorry to hijack the original thread!

Yeah they used to do a 'massive hat', mostly for winter wear, very nice by all accounts. Now they do the 'Robocap' and the 'Stinger'.

Interesting read. I have a pair of Assos FI Uno S5 Bib Shorts sat in a Wiggle box on my desk at work. They've been there since Monday, but I've been stuck at home with tonsillitis. Very frustrating as I'm dying to get my hands (arse?) on them. I've only had DHB bibs up until now, so it'll be interesting to see what the difference is.

Same here, got them today. Haven't tried them yet, hopefully they are as good as the mille ones I've had for a while.

You can really tell the difference, between everything else and Assos.

Anybody know if the pad/chamois in the Castelli shorts are anywhere near as good as the Assos?

    Argh.

I'm tempted to get some decent bib shorts for 10 days time. Doing 100+ miler. After my 101miles on Sunday, I find the Aldi shorts to be lacking (no surprise).

I don't really want to spend more than £40. I don't mind paying for quality, but the number of times I expect to be doing 50+ miles on the bike on one day isn't that high. For < 30 miles, Aldi ones seem to do the trick.

To be honest, I expect almost anything lycra, with a fully integrated pad, to be a big improvement. Though I heard a comment about the DHB bib shorts, that "everything was visible" from a female cyclist... um, I didn't enquire further, but I assume she meant they were rather thin.

Basically, not having worn bib shorts, I'm wondering if I can get away with £25, or if that extra £15, or even paying £60, will make that much difference.

I'm sure the DHB shorts would be fine for your needs. My housemate has some and he says they're good. Plus they don't look odd to me i.e I didn't see anything I didn't want to! I'd imagine they'd be a big improvement on your Aldi shorts.

The only (slight) complaint I have about my DHB bibs is you can only get a season and a bit of hard riding out of them before they're fit for the bin, but for the price, I don't think that's unreasonable. I've ridden 60 or 70 miles in a day many times in mine. I did 100 miles in them last May, and they've always been pretty comfortable. I think they're excellent value.

Hopefully next week I'll be back in here telling you all that DHB are crap, and unless you're wearing Assos you might as well not bother ;)

My DHBs aren't the most comfortable - the seam around the pad stands up just a little and can chafe on a long ride. Fine for shorter stuff though.
The most comfortable shorts in my collection are some Orca equipe ones - they have bugger all pad but have a system where a layer of internal lycra slides over a mini-pad and it works very well - smooth and does not stick to the skin to cause pressure points. That leads me to the conclusion that less is more in the shorts if you have the right saddle.
