Track hubs for the road

Hi,

I'm thinking of going fixed for the road... I like the idea of using Dura Ace track hubs, but will they stand the abuse that commuting will through at them?

I seem to remember Campag will not honor their warranty on their Record track hubs if used on the road.

Are there any alternatives to Dura Ace track hubs?

Thanks,

Dave

Quite a few alternatives: Phil Wood, White Industries, Miche, Surly, Dia Compe, Goldtech and the like, all do track hubs.

Phil Wood - gorgeous but expensive. i use Surly which have lasted well and my partner has Goldtech on her commute fixed. You can always upgrade to the higher cost options but I'd start with the latter two or even On-One.

It shouldn't make any difference, a quality hub will take on anything, you are implying that the Dura Ace is sub standard.

If you already have them and wish to use them on track, you might be well advised to get other wheels for the road. If you only intend to use them for the road then go ahead, and if they pack-up, then get a better pair.

DA track hubs are not sealed as well as road hubs....regular wet use will destroyt them ..

i would get soem Goldtech or similar

i used HOPE track hubs for a while..many miles of wet weather & bearings as slick as butter !

i also used a Q/r on rear on my hopes...you can do this with goldtech as well i think ??

Don't use Dura Ace, I dispatched a pair any they were toast within a month. If you must use cup and cone bearing hubs get Campag, but take the advice above and get a decent set of sealed bearing hubs and you'll have them for life.

    Hi there.

Goldtech are the dogs danglies for road riding. Accept no substitute.

Point of clarity - I was asking if a Dura Ace track hub could withstand the abuse thrown at it from using it day in day out as part of a commuting bike, that will inevitably get wet.

I did not imply Dura Ace are sub standard, mearly asked the question if they were suitable.

It would appear from SDPs post that DA track hubs would be destroyed with regular wet use and sort of supported by Pirahna's experience.

I will look further into sealed bearing hubs for fixed use.

    Thanks,

    Dave

I find that as long as I don't actually ride through water that comes above the hubs even OLD Maillards happily go all winter near enough every day. Regrease once a month if one is that way inclined.
