As I have said before i am a complete newbie. I want to spend around £250. I have seen the Specialized Hardrock Sport 08 and I'm going to have a look at it at je james in sheffield.
Any thoughts on this bike for a newbie?

Not a bad bike, but there are others to consider, such as the : GT Aggressor 3 &Carrera Vulcan disc (both ~£300)
The main reason both these bikes are better then the Spesh is due to both having a damped fork (which stops you pogo-ing on the trails & gives you more control of the bike)
When you buy a bike on-line you have no real way of knowing if it will fit/feel right, test rides are the only way to really know if the bike is for you.
When you receive a bike in a box, usually you have to put the front wheel on & the seat & the pedals & the bars. You may also have to adjust the brakes & gears.
