Bike basics?

is there anywhere I can find basic info on what to look for in a bike around the £250 mark.
Such as best brakes, what to look for in the frame, fork etc.
From what I have gathered so far:
Cheaper bikes front suspension only, dual susp just adds weight.
Good V brakes better than cheap disc brakes, or even better hydraulic disc brakes. (what is classified as a good V brake?)
yeah so thats about all I know.
