Need a new chain and cassestte- can anyone recommend an alternative (better?) to the shimano 10speed chain I am running on ultegra- i assume they're all compatible with the various 10-sped systems?. The shimano is cheap but any value in getting one of the slightly more expensive ones ( not £200 Ti..!)

cheers

KMC. Vary in price up to around the £40 mark. The cheaper ones are fine and with the "missing link" easy to remove for cleaning.

Do the KMC x series chains last longer than say a Shimano Ultegra (in terms of stretching)? I'm getting a new chain and was thinking of the x-10 93 which looks OK at £22.

Depends how often you clean it and what kind of wear it's subjected to.

I was thinking mainly in terms of which chain can resist the most strain before becoming stretched.
I clean after every wet ride and after a couple of hundred dry miles.

Find out which one David Miller was using today, then get something else!

I've just fited a KMC chain which went on very nicely. Can the link be re-used or as it says on the box can it only be used once?
Don't fancy needing to replace it every time I want to clean it.......

You can keep reusing it until you bin the chain.

Wipperman Connex are the best quality I've come across and they last for ages. Not very well known, but the titanium version is used by a lot by the pro teams on the quiet:

They also do normal steel versions, anodised colours - the gold is particularly cool - and stainless. A little bit extra than SRAM / Shimano /KMC but much nicer.

The original poster did specifically say not £200 Titanium though!

I'm not sure that any one fairly high quality chain is any better or worse than any
of the other ones. I've used Shimano, KMC, Wipperman, Sram, and can honestly say
that I noticed no difference in them. I'm not even sure what difference's I would be looking for other than Stainless or, possibly, color. They all seem to last until I put a new
one on. I lube them well and they all run quietly. Can't remember the last time I had a chain "problem". You say Ultegra is cheap. Do you mean quality wise or price wise?
I have been using Sram as of late because I like the master link idea and don't have any
problems with it. That said I have just bought a Dura-Ace chain, on sale, of course, and
will put it on when the Sram one starts getting sloppy. And I'll use a Sram master link.

Chains don't really strech per se, the pivot points wear enlarging the holes around the pins creating more play which appears to make the chain increasing in length (if there's tension through it). So minimising 'stretch' comes down to maintenance (get the abrasive grit out of it to reduce wear and keeping it lubricated) and how hard the metal used in the chain is.

Having had a look at it and tried pushing the links together and failed, is there a knack to reopening the "missing link"???
