New bike needed - but what to buy??

I commute all year round, 14 miles a day, on a whole range of roads from A roads to back lanes. I do some touring too (when I can escape the office) and ride to meetings as well.
I'm after a new bike, but haven't bought one for YEARS. I'm used to getting an old frame, bolting some bits on and making a fixie, but I'm wondering about spending some proper money - let's say £1k and just having one bike to commute, tour, hack around and just ride.
I'm really after some recommendations - what would people suggest?
