Chaps,

Just a quicky.
What do you recommend to accompany my U-Lock, to secure my lovely wheels?

A garage, a house, brick walls, or solid steel is my advice. but there is a review of some nice chains just apear on bike radar

I mean for when I'm out and about mate, just for the wheels really?

At home the bike will be in a brick outhouse with a ground anchor and some big chains.

A Fahgedeboutit (sp?) chain would be the most obvious I guess. I've got one for my motorbike.

I'm getting one for use at home, but it's a bit hefty to carry around though eh?

I'm thinking of riding to work. It would be locked in a private carpark and i'm pretty sure no one would be be getting through the Fahgettaboudit D-lock in a hurry.

hope your gonna get some road tyres to swap on for that, good off road rubber burns out pretty swift on tarmac.

one of the longer lighter chains just reviewed woud probably suit you just fine then. but if you have spent a good some of moeny on your bike i'd be carefull leaving anywhere, mine was in a secure lock up in uni... they actually took the bike apart to get it, must have seen me move it and decided it looked worth 1k.

If possible I'd use the U-lock to lock both the frame and the rear wheel to a post. After that I'd just go for a fairly cheap Kryptonite cable to loop round the U and lock the front wheel.

If the bike is attractive (and pricey) look at insurance, if someone really wants it they'll get it.

if your after some serious security for your bike look at almax.

i to spent hard earned cash on and a lot of it on abus locks sold secure rated gold and silver only to find they not much cop. after watching that how safe is your bike gone in 60 seconds on you tube, i started to think how safe is my bike, i then researched these locks i got and other big names oxford sqiure kryptonite ect and none of them came near the claimed 5 mins of attack that the sold secure gold claims they will susstain..
most of them didnt even last 40 seconds..

have a look at this link and these are motorbike chains which are suposed to be tougher than bike chains..
    Kryptonite Fahgettaboutit chain?
Hand bolt cropped in 42 seconds.

i got a few of these almax chains they are awesome quality but i wouldn't want to carry one with me on my commute or shopping trip they are heavy duty and i maen heavy duty.. but if thats what it takes to keep my pide and joy safe then it's money well spent.

only thing about the almax demos is they show the locks being chopped with bolt croppers with 4ft arms. most thieves carry much smaller ones.
Another point is although i'm sure they are genuine, i'd like to see them use the jaws they used on the other chains on their chain. but i guess im a natural cynic.

I got one of these to accompany my U-Lock... Works a treat around the front wheel. Just be sure to make sure the frame is locked down with the U-Lock

    PM'd you.
  • yeah, i'd recomend the almax locks. bought the immobiliser III lock, with the hardie ground anchor and squire padlock (the cen 6 rated one). good solid chain thats thatcham cat 3 rated.

also bought a kryptonite newyork u lock to accompny it. use that on the ground anchor first then attach the almax chain to it and the frame of the bike. (i only do this because i bought the wrong length chain) i thought 0.7 metres would be long enough.......it isn't, i recomend the 1.0metre or 1.5 metre chain if your thinking of buying one.

also, if the chain does get cropped, almax will pay your insurance excess (apparently)
