Tempting fate, but I like the Hutchison Quartz a lot and haven't had a puncture in over a year.0

Not sure if you have something against all Contis - but I love the Grand Prix 4 Seasons - awesome in all conditions and (touch wood) no punctures0

Armadillo's have worked well for me (albeit in a 25) - they are definitely for people who want puncture protection first and foremost as they are pretty unforgiving and pretty heavy too.0

Can your Ribble handle 25mm with 'guards? have considered getting one...but 23s only puts me off given the state of roads round my way
It's just a hill. Get over it.0 -
Wife and I both run Bontrager Race Lite Hard Cases in 25mm on our bikes and they very rarely puncture. Wife has only had 2 in the last 2000 miles - I switched to them after putting so many holes in a set of GatorSkins they looked like cheese.
The Bontragers ride like they are made of wood and have next to no grip in the wet, however...0 -
Just to add the usual supects, I ride Panaracer Pasella tourgards and have only had one 'p' in the last year (and that was because I ran over a six inch spike of glass). I ride 25s, but understand they come in 23s too...0

If your frame has enough clearance go for 25mm rather 23mm tyres.
Why? 23s are slightly quicker and handle pot-holes, cracks, bumps, etc. well enough. Least, that's what I've found.0 -
Biggest tip thought with any 'punture resistant' tyres is to keep them at the correct pressure.FCN 100

And don't ride over glass.0

That may help.FCN 100

Can you still get Kenda Thorn Resistant tubes in that size? I always found them very reliable, they are pretty heavy though but what do you expect of a tube that's over 4mm thick on tread side?"Swearing, it turns out, is big and clever" - Jarvis Cocker0

I think it'll just about take guards with 25mmsandrewc3142 wrote:If your frame has enough clearance go for 25mm rather 23mm tyres.

23s are only slightly quicker if the road surfaces are better. I use 23mms on my best bike, but 25mms on my ribble and I can really tell the difference in comfort. You can also run 25s at a lower pressure than 23s which means better grip in the dry and the wet, less bouncy, better cornering. This is the commuting forum after all, so 25mms are better for commuting.0 -
Ahhh, so thats why you don't get flats. Actually, there's an argument that 25's are faster for us mere mortals. At a given psi in the tyre and a given p on the bike, you need less tyre deflection to make up the same amount of i in contact with the road. Hence, less frictional losses. At higher speeds, the aero advantage of the 23's takes over.
I have no idea if this is right.
Another school of thought is that our road surfaces are so crap, that the extra shock absorbancy of 25's roll better.
What's the problem with Gator Skins, by the way?0 -

I only really started using 25mm a week ago when I finished building my "winter bike", and I've been using it for commuting since then and I can really tell the difference between them and the 23mm on my commute. I did all of last summer and all winter on 23mms and didn't have much of a problem though.0 -
Yeah - I only don't use them on the commuter because of clearance issues.
Please someone tell me what's wrong with Gator Skins0 -

Perhaps it's a moral consideration. They should stay on the Gators.
I'll get me coat.
