wheel spacers

im going to order some shimano r561 wheels and i have an 8 speed cassette and the site im ordering them from says i might need a spacer, does anyone know if i will need a spacer, my bike is a trek pilot 1.0

    I think you probably will need a cassette spacer to use an 8-speed cassette on a 10-speed hub - just an approx 2mm thick shim that fits onto the freehub body before you put the cassette on. Not sure if they come in different thicknesses - ask in the "Road Gear & Know How" section if you want more detailed advice.

    If you try and fit the cassette without it, you'll find that even with the cassette lockring fully tight, the cassette will still have some play in it.

    no - its the other way around.

    on 8 / 9 / 10 speed hubs the spacer is needed for the 10speed cassette - not the 8's or 9's - the 10speed cassette is narrower. (8's and 9's the same - thicker chain + wider gaps between ratios)

    the 561's will be fine - i fitted them to my trek pilot 1.2 (which was 9speed tiagra) and they are a great set of wheels.
