Is there a website available that allows you to plan routes by bike, and includes things like bike paths etc that the four wheeled multitude can't access?

Ta

P.S. not just for London

It's just a hill. Get over it.

I can only offer advice for London if that helps:
    You can try this site:

    http://www.cyclemaps.net/D/gaz.asp

Doe's a fairly good job of planning bike friendly routes, but I tend to find the map is rather cr4p and you'll end up having to read directions off the text and trying to follow on a proper map (or Google maps!) It also covers Bristol and Preston by the looks of the mainpage!

Failing that head over to the TFL site and order yourself some of the lovely cyclemaps they provide, they mark out all the cycle routes aswell as various other bike only and quieter roads that are recommended by other cyclists!

    Here you go

    http://www.sustrans.org.uk/default.asp? ... &town=town

Its nationwide (I'm north of the border). It is not possible to plot routes on it, however in combination with Gmaps pedometer (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ - go to "more options and scroll down to search for a UK city) or Bikely (www.bikely.com - which is linked to this site) you should be able to get what you need.

I'd not use that for the initial routing. My commute uses about 5 cycle routes that aren't indicated on this map, instead it's telling me to use main roads only.

The TFL website is great for getting your first route sorted, then a little investigation on the first few rides will give your preferred route.

I don't actually think I used that site much after my first few attempt's but I still had it in my bookmarks :-)

I completely forgot the TFL site does route planning and you can also save them to your computer to! They are good for getting the initial idea of where to head but you can then fine tune it to suit your riding style - especially as none of the maps show hills!

Hard to believe, I know. Mind you, there is no electricity or running water outside of London.

Ordnance Survey. Folding things. Work very well indeed and cover the whole country in various levels of detail.

There must be water of some sort. How else will they drown the witches?

If anyone has a good site for "NotLondon", I'd find it very useful, as I'd love to cycle from Birmingham back to my parents' place in Walsall , but don't fancy the drag along the A34, which is the only route I know.

As above, buy an OS map or two, make yourself a coffe and have fun planning.
