Can any one tell me , I wish to change the 10 speed 105 triple chainset on
my bike to the 9 speed XTR triple chainset, frist off, will the 10 speed chain still
be ok as I would like to keep the 10 speed block. Im almost sure that I will have to change the front derailleur and the front gear leaver. Thanks

the chain will be fine but the issue is the front mech
to run an XTR c/set you really should use a MTB front mech, as a standard road triple won't shift well.
But a MTB front mech is not compatible with road STI shifters (drop bar).
So you'll either need to do some tweaking with the cable routing, or use a friction shifter (or some other shifter perhaps)
Obviously ifyou run flat bars then this is not a problem as you just run a MTB shifter.Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0 -
The bike I wish to do this change on is a Cannondale Synapse with flat bars
so the front changer and front derailleur are the shimano 105 triple 10 speed
so hopefully they will be ok. When I spoke to my local bike shop he was not
to sure if this would all work.0 -
Your existing 105 front shifter almost certainly won't be OK, as it's designed to work with a chainring of at least 50 teeth (or maybe 48 at a push), so it's curvature won't match the 44 tooth big ring on the XTR chainset. This means the cage will be further away from the chainrings than it could be, and shifting will be non-optimal. A MTB front mech will be more curved to work with smaller chainrings, and should result in much better shifting.
The obvious solution though given you've got flat bars is to simply get an MTB left shifter to go with an MTB front mech.0 -
wot he said
XTR chainset
MTB fornt mech
MTB left shifter
you should also change the BB cups too as the MTB ones are a tad wider than the road versionsFacts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0 -
Do the BB cups come with the XTR chainset as it has an integral BB or
do I need to get them separately . By the way thanks ALL for your input on this.0 -
It has an integral BB axle but the bearing cups are separate
You need to buy them yes. Some places may sell the cranks and cups as a package but most don't. See chainreaction for some prices.
Note, any MTB BB cups will work - XT, Hope, Raceface, Acros, Superstar and so on (but not Truvativ GXP). If you're going for broke then ceramic Acros is the daddy. 8)Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0 -
Thanks to you all for your input, now its of to get the parts and see if it works.0
