Creaking seat post

I recently moved the seat up a little as I got some new shoes/pedals and the stack height was more than my old shoe/pedal combination.
Since I have moved the post it creaks almost every time I pedal. I thought at first it was comingfrom the BB but it stops immediately when I get ou the saddle.
Anyway I have tried greasing the post without much improvement, then degreased it. Then I thought maybe I had overtightened the seat colar.
What can be done to stop this? It is very annoying!
Still thinking!

I thought the creaking I was getting was the saddle until my Campag seat pin broke at the saddle clamp. When I fitted a new seat pin the creaking had vanished. An examination of the broken part revealed a long standing crack which finally gave way when I hit a bump.

My advice would be to think about replacing the seat pin. At least give it a close look.

Apply some parrafin (candle wax) to the mounting bracket, where the saddle rails touch the (aluminum?) bracket. This solved my problem many years ago of Ti rails against the aluminum bracket....worth a try!

  • weird I was gonna post a similar thread - I have a selle Italia kit karbonio with the carbon rails and it seems to be creaking. But I'm not sure if I should tighten it any more for fear of cracking the rails?

I'll try the candle wax thing first though - doesn't it make it slip??

While out riding on saturday i heard a crack( bit like the noise you make when clipping in and out of your pedals) and suddenly the seat started tilting backwards. I stopped immediately and could not believe that my 1 year old Quest aero carbon seatpin had cracked about 80% of the way round the diameter. Funnily enough about a month ago on cycling home from work on my Gazelle Aluminium framed bike my alloy seatpin broke off without warning. They say it happens in three,s Greetings Ademort

I had a similar creak and it turned out the shim, that is often welded to the inside of the seat post, had cracked. Had to send the frame back to be rewelded. It was probably as a result of me overtightening the clamp.

I've just replaced my seatpost and pin to resolve a creak. It was so loud the noise echoed of the buildings going though town. I had my seatpost up to the minimum insert line. Bought a longer post, creak has gone away.

I don't know what torque Selle Italia actually recommend, I couldn't find anything listed. On my Flite Kit Carbinio I have the clamp torqued over the 10Nm that is recommended. Otherwise the saddle really does move around and creak. I also have the saddle as far forward as possible (past the marker..). So far it's been fine..

I was wrong about my creak - its back. Tried greasing everything, even tried candle wax that someone had recommended. Starting to think it must be coming from somewhere else.

It depends on material, but if aluminium post and frame, then grease should cure the creak. Also, if there is a shim, remove this and grease the outside of this between frame and shim. I had a Giant that had the problem recur every 3 months or so - had to keep taking the post and shim out and regreasing

Thanks for the help. Turns out it was not the seat post but the frame under the seat collar has developed a crack which can now just be seen under the seat collar. On dear(or is it oh s**t!). Now checking out warranty!
