Hi, I am considering buying a small torque wrench for use on my bike. I have higher value ones for my car but most of the bike parts have settings too low for me to use them. Anyone use a torque wrench, if so which one ?

The only torque wrench I've ever used is a spring balance and a bit of mental arithmetic but I've never bothered to use it on my push bikes. I wonder if they're really necessary except perhaps when exotic materials like carbon fibre components are involved.

I also use my car one, but it goes down to quite a low torque, so its there or thereabouts for most things. I figure it may not be necessary, but no harm if i do use it.

Just posted on this subject in Begginners. I'll use one every time on carbon but have also seen alloy bars fail from an over tightened stem. I've got 3 torque wrenches for various jobs but had problems finding one with low enough values for cycle use. I bought this one:

I bought this one and find it really helpful as I have a carbon bike.

I'm awaiting delivery of a Cyclo torque wrench, completely free of charge as an incentive to subscribe to Cyclesport. I have never used one on a bike before, but having already cracked a carbon seatpost I thought it was about time I did.

Hi i use a torque wrench for my carbon bike, however it did not help much yesterday. While out cycling i heard a noise (the sort of noise you hear when clipping your pedals in or out) and suddenly felt the saddle tilting. I stopped immediately and noticed my Quest aero seatpin had cracked about 80% of the way round the diameter, it was just hanging on. It,s only a year old and now it,s knackered. Torque wrench did not help me much Greetings Ademort

I've got one of these for lower torque componenets:

And this for higher torque, such as Campag Ultra Torque joining bolt:

    http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/p ... TORQUE.htm

It may seem expensive, but it's cheaper than damaging carbon parts (or frame).
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

The Cyclesport offer is not online, you need to phone 0845 676 7778 and quote code 45A. They are open seven days, 9am to 9pm.

£21.60 for six months. I think you are expected to sign up for a year, but if you are a regular reader that won't matter. You save 10% on the cover price too.

Ok, quick update, ended up buying this:-
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BBB-TORQUE-CYCLE-BIKE-WRENCH-SET-BTL-52-RRP-49-99_W0QQitemZ170218985089QQihZ007QQcategoryZ109122QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262

Had a quick go with it last night seems to be well made, turns out I had been mostly under tightening components.

I've just bought a BBB TorqueFix wrench which will do 3 to 24nm. I ordered it with the prospect of carbon seat post and stem for the new bike. I'm still waiting to take delivery of that but I've put it to use on the stems and seatposts of my other bike.

With all this new carbon I'm wondering if I should maybe invest in something for the higher torques too.

I already had 2 higher value torque wrenches that I use on the car. They are loads out there at the higher value end.

    Hi,

I've never used a torque wrench before, but want to get one as I'm planning on fitting some carbon bars. Do you need special allen key 'bits' to use with the wrench?

I was going to order the BBB one from J E James which comes with those parts, but it's out of stock at the moment.

    Cheers,
    Steve

    Yup,
I use it for almost all final assembly.... stem bolts, seat post binders etc

I wrench for a living, so it's a must.... we have seen quite a few crushed handlebars, so there are some gorillas out there!

I use a small teng, but will look at the sealey, they make nice stuff. My medium and big torque wrenches are both halfords (lovely!) but I don't think they make a 1/4 drive torque wrench with a lower range.
