I've been looking at the SIS site as I use PSP22 when riding. I was looking at the 'Go' drink abnd after reading the description, I can't work out if there's much difference between them.

Any ideas?

PSP22 is an energy only drink.
    GO has electrolytes added.

    Can we fix it?
    Yes we can!

ok, which is the better option?
Is there an advantage to not having the electrolytes?

"Go" is the best in hot weather and generally replaces the stuff you sweat out.
PSP22 is supposedly for pre-ride carbo loading.
The "Rego" is a pretty good recovery drink post ride.

You can of course always make your own much cheaper mix of "Go" using normal carbo powder and Dioralyte or similar.

Go replaces just what you sweat out in terms of vitamins and minerals and provides very little energy.
PSP22 is a purely energy drink which depending on it's percentage concetration can either be isotonic, hypertonic or hypotonic :)

Just think Go for hotter (more intense?) rides, maybe backed up with a smaller bottle of psp22 or an energy bar. Then use psp22 for when you are trying to get carbs in or before an event.

Um, no. Go, has less energy than PSP22 but not `very little'. If on a 2 bottle sort of ride I'd take one of each, if only a shortist ride, take either one depending on how hot it is, IMO.

    PSP22:
    Energy 1683kj/371kcal, Carbohydrate 99g, of which sugars 6g, Protein 0g, Fat 0g.

    Go:
    Energy 1300kj/287kcal, Carbohydrate 76g (of which sugars 13g), Protein trace, Fat 0g, sodium 400mg, chloride 650mg, calcium 45mg, magnesium 10mg, potassium 120mg.

Glad someone pointed that one out :D

I use all 3 PSP22, GO and Rego and swear by them.
Heaven kicked me out and Hell was too afraid I'd take over!!!

I use Rego (and Go if its an event). You've got to drink Rego within 20 minutes of finishing - not because thats when it has the most effect, but just that 20 minutes is the time for the average cyclists pain thresholds to reset themselves. If you've been off the bike for 25 minutes there's no way that you'd consider tipping that muck down your throat - 10 minutes after an 80 mile ride and nothing seems too bad as long as your legs dont have to move :)

    Dont start me on gels...
  • I used to use SIS but now use Torq Energy. It is both carb and electolyte in one (1522Kj/365 kCal, Carb 91g (per 100g), Chloride, sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Tastes less sweet than SIS with a sharper more tangy taste (orange). Much prefer it.

Yeah but assuming you follow the recommendations on how much to use of each, you generally use very little of the Go and much more of the PSP22.

In the 700ml SiS bottle the line for PSP22 goes up to 100 grams worth, whereas the line for the GO powder is much lower, looking more at 15/20 grams worth. You're meant to have PSP22 stronger and therefore it provides a lot more energy, then have GO at a much lower level of concetration with a lot less powder.

Of course you can use them to the same concetration if you want, in which case they'll be very similar, but I think it's fair to base a suggestion based on recommended use. :)

I have been messing arround with some stuff called Maxim-NRG mixed with Diaoralyte (Diaoralyte on a hot day). The Maxim stuff is good carbo loader before during and even after training
    # Maxim Energy Drink is a hypotonic drink ensuring fast and optimal absorbtion.
    # Contains a carbohydrate quality of 48,5 to 74g per liter for optimal fluid and energy absorbtion. The drink can be composed to your taste (2 scoops = less sweet / 3 scoops = sweet).
    # Contains maltodextrin and fructose for fast and continuous energy.
    # Contains 9 vitamins to support carbohydrate and energy metabolism.
    # Contains 4 minerals to optimize fluid balance during exercise.
    # Has an osmolarity of max. 291 mOsm/l.
    # This product is vegetarian friendly.
    # This product does not contain ingredients which are on the doping list.

I tend to drink the Maxim/Diaoralyte mix before and during my rides and have a serving of plain whey protein in milk after my rides.

The Maxim range is really good stuff and is even used by a few pro teams. I think I got a big 2KG tub of the energy stuff for £14.99 and it makes 33 servings @ 3 scoops and 50 servings @ 2 scoops

I used to use both Go and PSP22 a bottle of each as one has lots of carbs, the other lots of elecvtrolytes. However, I now use Lucozade sport which has the same effect, and is cheaper and more importantly on the shelf in Tescos. I have used diluted smoothie with a little Lo salt (potassium and sodium chloride) instead of Go and that worked fine too. You would think that some companies seem to have some scientific claim to the power of maltodextrin.

I use Powerbar energy drink, and Go gels when in the bike.
I prefer to eat Clif Bars, and will drink Rego after a long ride. I get cramp if I use PSP22 (maybe not isotonic), and don't like the taste of SIS Go drink (it doesn't get drunk, and I end up getting dehydrated.
I mix and match from different manufacturers based on what I find most palatable and what works for me.

I bought a can of coke as I got the bonk on Sunday at the reservoir and felt fine after it. I have ben advised to try a 50/50 mix [with salt] I'm going to give it a go.

I've been trying Nuun electrolyte tablets for the first time. No carbs, just electrolyte. They come in various flavours - the one i've got just now has added caffeine and is cola flavoured. It seems to work well for me and tastes good on the bike (Off the bike it tastes like crap flat cola but once you've excercised a bit it tastes good!). You drop a tablet into water and it dissolves - handy for long rides as you can buy a bottle of water and just drop one in.

I also use PSP22 and Rego. They don't taste great but are palatable, especially Rego after a long ride.

How does Gatorade (or Lucozade Sport, or any of the others) compare to the SIS stuff then? I love the taste of Gatorade and tend to drink it even when not exercising so I was planning to use that when I finally manage to get my saddle soreness tamed enough to try longer rides.

Is it just more expensive to use Gatorade or is the SIS stuff actually better for some technical reason?

i've just gone for a big tub of torq over my usual SIS.

I do like the idea of a teblet over powder for long hot sportifs, less mess and ease of refueling. Who else makes these other than Nuun mention above?

I reckon full fat coke or pepsi has a massive effect if your fatigued. I ofetn grab a can on a long hillly route and after drinking it seem to get another new lease of life in my legs. I shall be inhaling the stuff on Sunday morning before the Oggies 25... :D

I missed the boat on the application time for our 25.
I may ride up anyway. I need to get out more [no I'm not sad!] for the miles.

    Good luck
