Shimano Deore brake adjustment

I think my brake levers have now got more travel on them compared to when my bike was new. If I grab the lever really hard I can get it to touch the bar (obviously not when riding as this would mean a wheel locking code brown moment!)
However after riding my mate's bike last weekend his did seem a lot more "direct". Am I right in saying I can adjust mine by twiddling that teeny allen screw inside the inner end of the moving part of the lever, that is presumably connected to the piston? If so, how much should I be turning? A couple of turns at a time? Half a turn?
I've checked the pads and I think they are OK, probably got more than half of them still left.
Thanks!

The screw you refer to is the lever reach adjuster. It doesnt adjust the bite point.
Maybe that the oil needs topping up slightly, or even a rebleed.0 -
OK thanks for that.
Any links? I had a look through the usual links in the sticky but could not find anything...

Hi all,
I need some help with the Shimano M485 brakes fitted to my Giant Trance X2 (I've moved to NZ - and this is the Austalasian spec - http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-AU/bikes/mountain/1333/29470/ - It was equivilant to <£1000 UK at the time so I reckoned a good deal ). It's the first bike I've had with disks after a 2003 Kona in the UK
Anyway - all was fine after bedding the brakes in initially. But then I moved to the South IsIand had to remove wheels to ship. Reassembled and Rear brake fine - but the Front does not bite correctly at all. Whilst the Rear will lock with no problems, the Front will not - it slows the bike very gradually and an endo would be impossible.
I have studied the manual that came with the bike - see link for online copy - http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techdocs/content/cycle/SI/SI_8ES0A_002/SI_8ES0A_002_En_v1_m56577569830616405.pdf - but not clear on how to resolve, without LBS help, any ideas?
Many thanks,
Andy0
