right lads and lasses am about to order my first spd type pedals, these two seem pretty good with right ups and general opinion, anyone had bad experiences with either? lad in lbs recommended sticking with the shimanos although he said the time are also good.
any opinions very welcome...cheers 8)

Shimano personally. I only use some old 505s but have found them reliable and easy to use. The Time look a bit different to most pedals, so if you want something out of the ordinary then they could be a good option.

The shimano have adjustable release tension so you can set them up to your preference, which would probably be what swung it for me if I was considering this purchase. They're a touch lighter too.

XTR bling factor is always nice too.

Start with a low cost pedal like a Shimano M520 and get the SH56 multi-release cleats.

My thoughts too. Seems like a lot of money to spend on pedals if you've not used clipless before.

will bear that in mind ,thanks.
read somewhere that if you are new to them to use single release? i have seen the xt770s for 39.99 though, so i dont think thats too much really? if they were going everywhere for 60 then yeh i would agree.
    thanks again :)

the Times will give you more float and movement if you have knee issues, I use the time atacs and they're great and easy to engange disenge etc..the aliums are cheap aswell

The M520s are £18 at Merlin, there was a Singletrack review of the two last September ('07), they said they couldn't notice the difference while riding, the weight difference was 4 grams if I remember correctly. The release mechanism is also the same on both of them, to be honest they look very similar too.

The XTs are easier to get into to maintain, not requiring a special tool. I'm fairly sure they're made of slightly different materials too, when this equates to 4 grams though it barely seems worth it.
  • shimano clipless pedals are the kind of item you can pick up 2nd hand on ebay for under £10 posted- that's what I'd do if I were trying it for the first time.

I got a "shimano clipless pedals" for £8 posted that turned out to be a 1999 (I think) XTR set- they're a bit battered but work fine

I have recently changed to clipless the first ride was a nice 15 mile blast on sunday before work. I didnt want to spend the earth only to find I didnt like it so opted for the M520's from Merlin.

Although they are cheap they are well built and comfortable ti use IMO, I used the single release cleats which came with them and found the clipping in and out to be very natural very quickly.

As far as differences from my previous flats I found that the pedal stroke feels smoother and more comfortable on climbs.
Wow great ship man. Looks like a fish, flies like a fish, steers like a cow.
