Clicking, creaking drive train

At the moment my bike sounds like a rusty gate when I ride it, it clicks and creaks like mad whenever I tuen the pedals.

Last Sunday my chain snapped when I was out riding, I managed to fix it and put it back on the bike but the drivetrain is still making a hell of a racket.

I am considering changing the chain and seeing if that makes a difference, as I have cleaned and greased everything apart from the BB (it could be this but I am looking at the cheapest options first)

My question is, do I also need to change the cassette if I change the chain, both have done approx 1500-2000 miles.

I'm hoping the answer is going to be no, but have a feeling it will be yes. :(

Thanks all.

If its only 2000 miles useage it should be well within its 1 year warranty.

I have the same sound at the moment and it is pretty weird but bike feels okay.. I think it just needs a service..

The bikes done much more, I changed the chain and cassette about 1500 miles ago, the BB and chainset has probably doen closer to 4000 miles. The teeth on the big and small chainrings look fine as do the teeth on the cassette.

I only ask as always thought that you were meant to change the cassette and chain together.

    Cheers

The cassette and chain tend to wear together, but you don't need to replace both at the same time. A lot of folks rotate two or three chains and then replace the cogset when they all wear out. Good idea if you are using expensive cassettes!

Have you checked your pedals? Dérailleur pulleys might squeak too.

Anyway, be sure to change that chain right now. It's done, and is potentially dangerous!

I stripped the bike down completely, took chainrings off, brakes off pedals etc, all that was left was the frame, forks, BB, chainset and headset. I then cleaned everything and regreased all nuts and bolts etc and put it all back together, relubed the chain and adjusted the gears and all seemed well for about 30 miles.

The next day I rode it again and all the noises started again, ending up with the chain snapping on Sunday, this is why I figured its the chain.

If I can get away with it I don't want to buy a new cassette as well as a chain, but if I have to then I will.

You will defo need a new chain. I use KMC chains and have never had a problem.
