Super annoying rattle
This is driving me bonkers, so if anyone has any ideas to rescue my sanity I'd be grateful.
Annoying pinging noise that seems to be coming from the front end of the bike, fork / headset/ bars type area. Can be replacated by bouncing the front wheel up and down a couple of inches with the back end grounded.
Doesn't seem to be the front wheel as I've tried 2 completely different ones with the same result (though used the same skewer). Isn't the cables, have replaced the gear cables and temporarily taped them to the frame to rule out them hitting the frame as the cause. Also doesn't seem to involve the drivetrain as this is now super smooth, and the noise doesn't seem to get better or worse under accleration.
Turning the handlebars seems to produce the noise as well, but not always, in fact mostly it doesn't. All i can think of it's the headset or the stem but can't for the life of me think how either of these would produce a ticking noise. The fork is an all carbon jobby if that makes any difference, anyway... it's driving me crackers trying to isolate it.

i'd try the headset preload next though if I were you.
slacken the stem bolts (on the steerer) and tighten the top bolt up a bit - re-tighten stem bolts - see what happens.0 -
I thought that too.
Pull the front brake and rock the bike back and foreward on the spot. If there is any play in the headset (as opposed to the slight flex through the wheel and fork) then it is too loose.
It could also be a "ticking" wheel bearing. Take the wheel out, hold either side of the hub and let it rotate slowly. You will feel every imperfection in the bearings. You might feel a general "rumble" (you shouldn't, but you might, and its probably nothing to worry about) however if you feel a distinct tick, that's a damaged bearing. It needn't be regular when riding, since it may only become evident under certain load directions.
Try the headset first though.0 -
I had a super annoying rattle (shall we call them SAR's from now on? - it's a great an useful term!) last night - I could have SWORN it was from the fork / headset / cable routing / edge305 moutn area.
turned out to be my saddlebag - the CO2 cartridge tapping the underside of the saddle mount
only goes to show that you never can tell (chuck berry?)0 -
Ta for some ideas, had another go and though I didn't cure it, found no play in the headset, the wheels seemed fine and the preload on the headset didn't seem to change anything.. I did find the stem was a *really* tight fit on the steerer, so much so it was a job to get it off... could this carbon & aluminium contact cause my creak/rattle?0

I have a rattle at the front end too on one of my bikes and found the STI levers to be at fault. Any chance it could be this? ( I jammed a piece of cloth in the front opening with the levers pulled back and the rattle disappeared - brings me to the next question how do you fix that but perhaps I should start a new thread )0

Check that the gear cables are not rattling against the frame when you go over bumps.0

remove your handlebars and regrease all the bolts before refitting it. If that doesn't do it remove your forks and headset races and regrease the bearings. If that still doesn't do it buy a new bikepm0

Bit of an update, after taking apart most of the bike... found my annoying noise! Turns out it was the frame.
The frame is a scandium alloy jobby, with a sort of lug on the top tube as pictured, it only appears to be welded at the ends though, a drop of lube under the lug and I have a noise free bike, yay.
