Sorry for bad questions, re: what bike out of these??

been trying to buy a mountain bike, i'm not very clued up if i'm honest, but told to look for alloy frame and disc brakes, £250 really is my max budget and i think i'd prefer brand new
this place seems good, and what would people advise out of these two bikes?
most of my riding will be dirt/footpath type trails with a bit of on road, but nothing mad, i.e: probably ride for a hour at a time, mainly to get around instead of my car.

any pointers? advice or other recommendations? i know you have a section on here for that
btw i'm 6ft tall and weigh 11st, will a medium size be fine, 17" to 19" ?
