Hello,

have just ordered some 700c 35mm tyres for my gf's new commuter, Schwalbe CX tyres.

I currently have 3 types of inner tube:

Decathlon own brand: 20-28mm
Specialized: 20-28mm
Continental: 18-25mm

Going by that, am I right to think none of the above are suitable???

Appreciate your comments.

She'll certainly being working harder with those tyres if she commutes on road. Why so wide?

    Hi Andrew,

it's just over half road, and the rest is off road, gravel, grass and mud, and as she will also be popping out at lunch offroad also, it will be the majority of her time on the bike.

I've seen some IRC tubes on CRC which are listed as 35-38 - is that what I should be getting?

    Makes sense.

Sounds the right tube, but given it's a fairly unusual size (since most MTBs are 26") once you're happy I'd stock up on a few.

    Cheers

    I've also found http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Specialized-Innertube-Offer-X-10_3923.htm

    And: http://www.parker-international.co.uk/ProductDetails/mcs/productID/6902/groupID/8/categoryID/101/v/f7aebad1-18bc-41ce-a44a-62ac4acd91bb

    What would you go for?

And do you need to run exactly the correct size of innertube, or would one ranked up to 28 be ok in a 35?
A friend of mine runs 1.5" innertubes in his 2" MTB tyres, and he's never had a problem, sill maybe because the pressures are a lot lower, and perhaps there is a safety aspect that isn't worth risking!

  • Have you actually bought the tyres yet?

The Schwalbes are some of the lightest CX tyres out there, and cases are THIN.

If you haven't already got them, I would suggest the Vittoria CX tyres

    http://wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5360035183&N=Vittoria%20Cross%20XN%20Pro%20Tyre

They are fast on the road, and very resilient, don't let the semi slick look fool you, they are very grippy. My commute is on sand, mud, tarmac, cyclepath etc.
Admittedly only had them on for 2 weeks, but have been very impressed with them.

I would have thought you need the same width or just slightly smaller then the tyre.

Any smaller and there will be a semi inflated tyre?

    Dirk,

have ordered them from CRC, but not yet despatched, could potentially cancel it over the phone.

What size tube do you use with your tyres?

AW, not sure, but I guess what you are saying makes sense.

  • I run 32mm tyres, with 28mm tubes. Of course tubes will stretch quite a way, just don't push them too far

    Thanks for that Dirk,

I guess my only reservation with the Vittorio's is that they don't have a reflective tyre edge.

I thought that was a useful safety feature for the winter nights?

Ok so the CRC order has already been despatched, so I have ordered 10 new inner tubes from Tredz for £20 delivered which I thought was pretty good.

Will defo keep those Vittoria tyres in mind, and will be interested to hear what you make of them long term.

What pressures do you tend to run them at?

Will consider them for my gf's hybrid depending on the performance of the Schwalbe's, and as I want to convert my Highway one into a Cyclo X style of bike, I may look to get a pair for that - noticed that Ribble seem to have them for around £15 each if spending over £50, which seems a good deal.

    Cheers

What on earth? that is a totally normal size tyre for a hybrid or evn a touring bike, did you try asking at a bike shop?

The slightly smaller ones will work fine as they will stretch but the rubber will be thinner and they will therefore be more prone to puncturing.
