6 Hour commute

Finished work at 6 tonight and it was such a gloriious day that I coudn't possibly ride straight home so I went visiting, 3 stops, 32 miles and a free dinner later I arrived home at about ten to midnight.
It was such a perfect windless summery evening that frankly I didn't want to stop and would've carried on had Mrs Attica not have finished work at half past and been due home.
It was such a great feeling, being in the middle of nowhere, in my own little puddle of light, the only sound was the swish of my tyres.
Did anybody else have an epic detour tonight?

I nearly took a detour to Richmond Park for a couple of circuits last night and will do so tonight if the weather holds, hence I've got my most comfortable pants on in expectation of a three hour commute home.
I was a bit gutted I didn't go last night when it stayed light for so long.0 -
8 miles turned into 22, almost all of that off-road traffic free, and not a soul around.
:P0 -
Short detour off the King's Road last night to avoid the gun battle that was being waged there at 1700 :shock:0

I turned 5 into 12. Too nice an evening not to.0

Mine's 29 back anyway, and once I was up on the moors there was a savage headwind. I pushed hard to try to get a best time (3hrs 17) and didn't quite make it thanks to the wind so decided to knock it on the head and get some of the jobs done instead (if I'd decided to ride on I'd have only had to do more (big) hills and having already done nearly 60, its enough0. TT time tonight so it's probably best to save the energy.0

Not an epic detour, just got home, cycled with my lad to his badminton club and then home. Went back for him. Totalled around twenty miles yesterday and know the feeling of just wanting to carry on. 8)FCN 100

I didn't commute yesterday, stayed at a friends the night before
So I made up for it when I got home...Went for a quick circuit of Richmond Park ....PRJ45 you missed a great ride even if it was slightly fly filled
Today I rode in and enjoyed every minute - even the head wind!...now I'm thinking how to make my commute home a little longer
Not too much longer though0 -
Reading this really makes me want to extend my commute home this evening! I'm starting out on the south side of vauxhall bridge and heading to south norwood via brixton. Thinking about going via clapham and tooting now to get some extra mileage out, but then the wife is expecting me home to help with the new little one, so as much as I'd love a longer commute I value my other bits more :-)
Got a nice ride to docklands for the next 3 days tho so I can look forward to 12 mile rides each way then, was quite nice doing that route yesterday!0 -
I did my usual 3.8 miles home last night, but then as soon as I got home I went out for a run. I love these light evenings!*´¨)

Epic Detour, well sort of.
Dundee -> Wormit via Kirriemuir.
Though I was in a chafferer driven fibreglass box.
Bag is packed for tomorrow though :-)
Bottle of SPF 35 sitting waiting for use, probably going to have to pay smiths rates for one at the hospital though.Do Nellyphants count?

The weather has been glorious all week and the past couple of days the route home has changed to take in more of the Fylde Coast, the usual 8 has turned into 14/15 and a cold beer in the garden at home to round it all off. Roll on Summer.0

I've been reading these posts, and all I can say is
I'm into my second week of commuting 2.7 miles each way, so about 5½ a day in total, and this leaves me absolutely knackered.
It is the first time on a bike for 25 years, but there's no way on earth I could manage another mile after my daily commute
Reading this thread has made me realise how amazingly unfit I am!
I envy you all.

Good work, the fitness will come. Ride slower mate, much slower. You want to be capable of holding a normal conversation whilst riding, if you're puffing that's too fast.0

Ok Thanks.
I'm not particularly fast at the minute anyway, I do it in about 12 mins, and I think I average around about 12mph-ish.
Once I get a bit fitter I'd love to go further, day rides etc.
Maybe in time
