Buying a GT mountain bike advice

Hiya Everyone, hello to everyone on the forums
ok looking for a bit of advice.
I want to get into mountain biking again, the last time i used my bike was about 3 years ago, I purchased a Giant Terrago, this has no shocks at all, i think i paid about £399 for it, I still have it but I'm on the look out for something better as I want something with disc brakes and front shocks, I don't want a full suspension bike, just a hard tail with front shockers etc.
I've been looking at the GT range, model Avalanche Expert Edition 2008 to be exact, I wondered if this would be an ideal bike for me to jump up from a standard frame bike, I've seen cheaper models not just GT, Marin and other brands, but the GT seems to have more features and quality parts etc.
Can anyone help, or can give me some feedback on the GT model
I'm UK based
Thanks
Peter

Its an excellent bike, recently got one !!
But then again there are so many other choices, i would goto your LBS and try a few, thats what i did !!0 -
Merlin Malt 2 : http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=produ ... egoryId=39
Much better forks than the GT, better wheelset too.0 -
The Avalanche would be able to take a bit more hammer than others at this price point, designed for harder hitting trails, and runs happy with the fork at 130mm.0

Hi everyone, thanks for your replies, i went to one of my local cycle shops yesterday, they did not have the GT model on display, but he said he could order it me etc, however the guy was suggesting the Kona Caldera, it was a red one with the same shocks i think.
anyone know how this fairs upto the GT, as the shop was quite full and I didn't really have the chance to fully ask the guy.
thanks0 -
get him to order the gt in, and try them both out.- Kona Hot '96 - Marin Rift Zone '09 - Cannondale Synapse Carbon '06 - Kona Caldera '98 - Kona AA '94 - Dawes Kickback II - Cannondale BadBoy '11 - Genesis iOiD SS -0

i have had my specalized rockhopper disk £600 for a while now and its a really soild bike.Specailized Enduro 08 - Beast
OnOne 4560 -
i would go for the gt over the kona, better finish to it as well between them at £700 i reckon. test both to be certain though.if we need trees for the air we breathe..
then how come when we hit the tree it takes the air out of us??... ( trees...the selfish b***erds want it back!! )0 -
I've had me avalanche expert for about 6 months now and apart from a few issues with the rear brakes it's a great bike.
I went for it for the spec especially the Tora u-turn because I am about 16 stone I thought the extra travel would come in handy for me, it's also really sturdy. Such a change from the canondale F600 I had before (2nd hand). I also think it's quite a forgiving bike to develop with.
I tried it against the rockhopper and found it to be much more suitable for me at any rate.
Whatever you get happy riding0
