I started out this morning and simply forgot my shorts. I only noticed at the first set of lights and some driver told me that I should be more careful.

Shorts are a vital piece of (public) safety equipment you should really be more carefull
  • Having no shorts on would certainly make me more careful - I hope you wiped properly as well!
  • There'll be a whole deluge of folk along in a minute to argue about the pro's and con's of wearing shorts, it'll be like one of those hell-#3+ threads :P
    could run for weeks :?

    From my brief research. Shorts are absolutely lethal and should not be worn at aby time. According to ROSPA;

The number of accident victims for your chosen circumstances are shown below.

    Year Victims
    2000 1,206
    2001 2,017
    2002 1,456

A summary of your query is shown below.
Your query found the following accident victims:

    Object or product involved: Shorts

So there are around 1,500 incidents per year involving shorts.

Not wearing shorts massively increases your chances of skidding.

I would've thought that not wearing shorts would eliminate the issue of skids :P

I saw a chap this morning cut in front of a car at a junction, RLJ whilst not wearing a helmet after drafting behind someone and not taking his turn... what a surprise he was wearing shorts.

I was talking about saddle skids. Very nasty!
  • I rarely wear shorts - or indeed clothing of any sort - in the summer (apart from my shoes). I find the weight saving benefits and consequent performance boost by far outweigh the filthy looks I get from fellow road users and the inconvenience of an occasional visit to a police holding cell...

I think the more pertinent question is:

Did you feel safer when you'd gone back and put them on!?

Personally you'd not catch me without some sort of protection ;-)

Best to be protected when you're sliding in and out of the traffic. ;)

I once rode to work with tights and boxers, it wasn't till I got to work and changed and couldn't find my boxers I realised my error
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

I think it's about time the government stepped in and legislated for this, it is obvious that wearing shorts is an impoprtant road safety feature (provided they carry the correct British Standards stamp of approval of course)

I for one would never contemplate riding one of these bicycle things without them. I think riders that do are simply placing their own lives at risk. Isn't this why we have an elected body? To protect all of us?

Aren't you glad you did, so much more entertaining than the Hell-met threads.

Of course going out without shorts can have a "helmet" aspect to it...

    Umm... a what?!

Well, I feel much safer wearing protection in unknown territory.

On my patch, I sometimes go without... but that is an informed decision!
