Any ideas about what would be the best/fastest/most durable wheelset (campag compatible) to be used mainly for commuting 20 miles per day across london? I'm 13 stone on a good day but not a bad climber for all that! I'm looking for something fast and strong and i am willing to spend up to £400 if i have to. Most likely to go on a kinesis KiC2 when it gets built up. Apart from commuting I want something to handle sportives and credit card touring with a saddle/bar bag.

bring on the ideas, oh yeah!

  • I reckon for fast commuting you've got to go a long way to beat Mavic Aksiums. They're fast and feel good, but are not so expensive that it's the end of the world if you damage them.

And they're tough too. I'm 14 stone (on a good day as you say!) and use them for my 17 mile Bristol commute. I've been riding mine since September, every day in all weathers. I bounce them up and down curbs and bunny hop over speed bumps and they're still fine...

My choice for a do it all wheel would be a pair of handbuilds. Might not look as bling but just as fast and easy to repair should you fail to miss a pothole. £400 will get you just about anything you fancy.

Up to £400 for factory wheels have a look at something like Eurus, I commute on mine with no issues. One of my clubmates is 17 stone and can't break them either, they are a truly bombproof wheel.

Running wider tyres will really help keep stress on the wheel down. At least 25c :)
