Just went to a bike shop and bought a replacement cable for my rear mech which broke yesterday. It is for Dura Ace STI. The guy gave me a standard cable with no packaging for £1.50. Will this be ok or is there a proper Shimano DA inner cable that I should be using?

it'll probably be fine - the ends are all the same - might be a slightly cheaper cable at that price - the DA packaged ones are about £20 (with outers)

The first cable took 9,000 miles to break. Will this cheap one last as long? Can I buy Shimano inner cables and is there any advantage in doing so?

Also, should I replace original front mech cable as a precaution at the same time?

    Hi there.

Replace the front cable if you're sufferring poor shifting. Otherwise you'll be fine - gear cables don't take a lot of tension and rarely fail.

Cheap gear cables tend to get "sticky" quicker, and then you'll lose your well indexed shifting. I've got this problem on my commuting bike - but I can't be arsed fixing it.

You can buy Shimano inner cables on their own - at Parkers for example.
