lower back pain

my uncle has decided to join me on a few of my adventures over the next few years, he has chosen coast to coast this year then l/end - j/groats next. He used to ride London to Ireland and London to Amsterdam wiith some friends for charity on pretty awful bikes by todays standards, but stopped when he had a nasty football injury and messed up his knee, then had children then put his lower back out and has had back issues since.
He would like to buy a new road bike and came to me for some advice as I ride regularly, but I know nothing! basically he needs something on the cheap scale I would think, somewhere between sora and 105 or Campag alternative. but due to his lower back pain something with a high front end (within reason). I could only think of the Specialized Allez,
has anybody tried bikes at this range and have any knowledge on which have the most 'upright' lower back friendly positions? or any other tricks to make hours in the saddle more achievable.
Thanks

A number of the main bike co's have bikes in their range with a longer head tube, therefore slightly more upright riding position. Some to consider: Giant SCR, Cannondale Synapse, Specialized Roubaix and Trek Pilot (not sure if it's still available). Of these options, I think the SCR has the most options in your suggested price range - SCR 1.5, 2, 3 and 4.
Other companies will offer very similar bikes as it has become quite a growth area over the last few years.0
