Hi people

Ok, promised my son a new bike this summer and the time is near.

He's 12 years old, so I'm guessing something like a Kona shred, Scott YZ?

Budget circa £400 new, or perhaps slightly used better spec bike.

Thanks for your time

Z

Assuming he wants a cool, jump bike type thingy, and he s a bit small (being 12) then I'd suggest a 24" bike rather than a full blown 26" one as he'll find it easier to ride and more enjoyable. I'd suggest the 247 slacker SS

It is a little over budget at £499 though.

That said, I'm now on my second scott voltage, and love it, even if it is totall impractical over an distance (it's a small and I'm 6") They ride really nicely, but to find a reasonable one I think you'd have to go way over budget. I think the 247 is lovely though.

Wow! thanks for the quick reply!

After a quick search on the 247 it really does look good but he's going to need it for commuting 4 miles a day - school and back.
Maybe something with gears would be more apt?

I know it's over my budget but how do you rate the Scott 2008 Voltage YZ 15?

Also, forgot to mention I may take him on a short weekend down hill break during the summer holls (providing I can afford my own bike  )

If he wants it for commuting and trails riding then there are better value for £400 -£450 quid than the scott. That said, they ride really nicely but not ideal for distance and trails, more of a street/jumping frame.

I'd look at the avalanche 1, '07 hardrock pro disc, '07 rockhopper disc, merlin malt 1
