Gears are not working correctly.

Sometimes I'm riding along and the chain randomly changes to another gear on its own, and also if I am going up a hill or even on a streight and I got off the saddle to push harder the chain ends up changing onto a different gear or it seems to skip or something, whatever it does it can end with my feet flying off the pedals and I remember it happened once on my old bike, was going about 15mph and then it happened and the frame between the saddle and handle bars ended up inbetween my legs at 15mph

perhaps the chain or gears (or both) are worn? How many miles have you done on the chain?

and when you stand or put a lot of power down, you flex the frame which can pull the cable and change gear.

First thing I'd do is to adjust the gears

read this it'll explain it better than I can

Thanks I'll have a read of that.

And I have done about 1000-1200 miles on this bike since I have got it, last friday I cleaned the chain and gears aswell, did not seem worn.

Did you get it brand new ? If so then its probably that the cable has stretched a little, this is normal and nothing to worry about, you'll just need to adjust the cable tension with the little barrel adjuster on the rear mech.

I guess it'll need tightening then?

they probably do require a bit of a tighten up - that sounds right.

don't go daft though - it could be as litle as half a turn on the cable adjuster - cables don't stretch that much these days - they come from the maunfacturers pre-stretched.

    Hi.

Well I've had a go off the saddle and I think its solved for now hopefully.

Also on the front the chainring is bent for some reason, so what happened was as I was pedaling the chain hit the front mech and caused abit of noise, adjusted the front derailleur now and we seem to have eliminated it touching the derailleur even though the chainring is bent.

Seems fine now, all I need to do is get the clipless pedals and do some pedaling!, 5 days of sun now!!!
