Removing a "Spin on" type freewheel ?

Neighbour of mine, has a bike with one of the Spin on type freewheels, and basically needs to get it off, because the wheel needs replacing.

How is this done? I have a chain whip but can't see how that would help? if there some other special tool required?

This sounds like a normal freewhell and just needs a freewheel tool locking into the splines and a big 'jussie' clamping onto the freewheel tool. Be warned that over time these things can be a bugger to get off as the action of pedaling will tighten the freewheel up. Keep the tyre on the wheel, get a friend to hold the wheel with a pair of gloves for better purchase and use an extension on the 'jussie'.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Easiest way if you have a bench vice is to put the freewheel remover in the vice, then you can use the whole wheel as a lever to loosen it.
  • Thanks for the advise.

I don't have a removal tool, and to buy one is almost as much as a Freewheel, so I think I'll recommend a new freewheel, could save a lot of time, especially if the freewheel is seized on.
