nope. most people use the same front and rear. but may have differing disc diameters.

    what difference?

it is nice to have brakes that feel the same.

but you can use what you want.

it also helps that you do not need to keep spares for two brakes.

The only difference i could see is some brakes use different oils, so you may have to buy two types of fluid if you bleed them. Also, you'd have different levers, which would look odd, but that may be because i'm slightly OCD about my bike

Yes, its a right pain having different brakes, I have a magura louise on the front and an hs33 on the back (no disc mount), and it really annoys me beacuse:
    1. it looks untidy.
    2. when you pull the levers the brakes react totally differently.
    3. people keep asking "why do you have different brakes?" and its annoying haing to explain....

of couse 2 different disc are a different kettle of fish, but its much cooler to have matching brakes... and you're cool, right?

it doesnt make any difference after a couple of rides your brain will adapt to the diferent brakes I ran for over a year with different brakes hayes 9 front and magura louise rear and I made it down snowdon no problem

Even matching brakes will have different feel for the simple reason on the front when you brake your weight goes forward forcing the tyre into the ground giving you better grip allowing you to brake harder

on the back the opposite happens leading to lock ups your brain compensates and you automaticaly brake differently with your left and right hands

so its all down to looks and wether you rate form over function

by the way I have just bought some trick maguras because they were red :D

  • i used to have a BB7 on the front for control and progressiveness and a HORRIBLE deore thing on the back for slam-on manouverability. Worked well & it made the bike very unique. When i was used to it it was brilliant and I'd def consider trying two different feeling brakes again as front and back wheels operate differently in brakeing and manoverability.

Saying that: in the before time, both brakes used LX levers as they were mechanical, and now I have a juicy 3 up front and a v brake rear so the levers are different which isn't quite so cool.

so in summary - different brakes is a good idea if you know how the callipers will perform and use the same levers

  • out of curiosity then anyone got a spare avid juicy 5 lever going then?

You can't interchange levers and calipers unfortunately. You'd have to change the whole brake.
  • nah nah ihave a juicy 5's but the rear levers gubbed

  • ive got Formula the one at the front and an old hope on the back. The handlebar looks untidy but it works well.
