Me and a few friends from Uni are entering it this year- just wandering if anyone had done it before or knew what kind of level of racing we should expect there?

We both ride a lot and have been doing so for a few years. We haven't got much racing experience but we both have been doing chaingangs twice a week in prep plus a race is taking place before it which we're entering as practice.

I think we're just looking to finish in the main group without getting dropped.

Any advice?
Anyone done it before?

For starters - I seem to recall in some of your posts a while ago that you said you were studying at York, as did I a few years ago, so the Athletic Union folks should be able to pick up the bill for your entry fees, travel and any overnight accommodation provided you have the relevant bits of paper as proof. At least this was the case when I entered a BUSA championship (2002 cyclo-cross). Also, if the 'cross event I rode is anything to go by, there's a good mix of abilities, so you should be able to find your level and compete against similar people. From my experience, Loughborough always seemed to be the institution to beat, not least because they seem to have strength in numbers and field big squads with a knack of controlling a race.

Good memory, yeah I'm up in York and the AU has been nice enough to give our club lots of money some of which will go on this.
A mix of abilities would be nice, If we can find a largish group of similar abilities to us then with a bit of working together we might beat a few of them :)

I don't know about Loughborough but if we can beat Lancaster that'd be nice :D
Cycing isn't a part of the Roses, so we have some unfinished business :)

I've done it before, although I was hardly in peak condition. The standard was high when I did it and the course was tough. The winners all rode for sponsored teams already and were racing at around 1st cat level. You have to remember that you aren't only competing against 'enthusiasts' you are competing against top young athletes from sports focussed universities where they have top quality coaching and training facilities, not to mention an awful lot of time to train.

One of my team mates got second, but not through any efforts of the rest of our team... we just did our best to hang on!

I'd go for it, the AU will pay, so it will be some good free experience, but I think your objective to not get dropped is probably all you can hope for with no racing background... but you never know!
